Did a few more little things today. Changed out my wiper arms for the 89 models and swapped out my broken cowl cover.
I swapped out the straight arm 98 wiper arms:
For the 89 "bent" arms:
I prefer the earlier models because they sit lower on the windshield when off (less in my sight line), they both sit level and even with the cowl (just a looks better to me thing), there's no loss of wiper coverage when on and they just plain ol' look cleaner than the 98 arms (at least they do to me).
The PO also really messed up the original wiper arms. They were beat on to the splines (hammer marks on the base) and so messed up I had to drill a hole in the face of each so I could get some penetrating fluid inside them. Then, it took an hour of wiggling, moving and prying to get both arms off. The "new" ones slipped right on and have a nice coat of anti-seize on the splines in case I have to remove them later on.
I also removed the cowl and did what I always do when I buy a new vehicle, wash out the plenum area at the base of the windshield. Why do I always do this? Well:
I've seen far too many vehicles rotted out in this area in my travels and it's a biotch to repair. Dirt holds water which makes rust, but wet bio mater is even worse. Wet bio makes heat while decomposing, which only accelerates the rusting process. So, I wash mine out every couple years and on every "new" vehicle that joins my stable.
I finished up with the new/old cowl cover and a few replacement spray nozzles.
One more small but significant change down, 5, 568, 798 to go........
