The "restification" of a 98 6.5 TD...

I would be interested in details on your extra cargo light switch.... I have a spare switch, and would like to do something similar

Pretty simple:

I turned the switch sideways so it would fit in the lower blank panel spot squarely, cut out the hole for the switch body and then slipped it in. A dab of hot glue from the back holds it all secure.

The wiring is in the stickies for "fast idle mod" IIRC. The cargo switch just replaces the toggle switch in the write up.

I used the cargo switch so it would look like the rest of the switches in the dash....

the wife just gave me the go ahead to do the injectors and glow plugs on the truck.

Now, rebuilt or new?

Hmmm......

Anyone ever use Harbor city Diesel in Naniamo? I've heard a couple good things about them....

ok... just cant tell if its in flush or not

I will figure something out!

Nope.

It's too wide to sit in flush. you can see that if you look at the pics closely.

If you did cut the opening big enough to "flush mount" it, it would cut out the tabs that hold the panel in. It would also cut the panel pretty much in half.

Since you have a spare switch, just pull the panel out of the dash, flip it over and try to put the spare switch up to the back of it and you'll see what I mean...

Ordered a "warpspeed" crossover pipe kit to replace my rotting stocker.

Also, bought some additive for the truck based on the recommendation of Malcom at Harbor City Diesel in Nanaiamo.

Gotta say, so far it seems like pretty good stuff!

A few minutes after adding it, the truck is smoother and quieter than it's been since I bought it.

Stuff is called Petrolabs Diesel power Plus. From the bottle label:

"Diesel Power" 16oz. (Made in San Diego CA)
1) Lubricity Plus
2) Totally disperses water
3) Contains no alcohol
4) treats up to 500 Gals
5) Cleans fuel Injector Systems
6) Controls waxing and gelling
7) Prevents formation of ALGAE and harmful acids
8) Lubricates Cylinder walls
9) Improves fuel economy
10) Reduces exhaust smoke.
Add one (1) Oz to every 32 Gals.

Seems pretty good so far and the one 15 dollar bottle will last me pretty much 6 months to a year....

Engine cover showed up today and I popped it on:

I have no idea why guys take these off, it cleans up the engine bay very nicely. There's also no way this thing is going to trap any appreciable heat, it's wide open in the back and it's heavily vented across the top. My FSD is in the bumper, so no issues there.

At least, it'll trap no more heat than the hood itself.

Say what you will, I like it!

:)

Looks awesome man. I love mine in my truck. Makes it look clean and for all my friends that no nothing about engines they go "its a turbo!!!??". makes me laugh everytime

Mine was removed 2 reasons, 1st because of the PMD overheat, cured by remote mounting and making it a FSD, 2nd reason easier to maintain & monitor the components under it.

And as far as giving it a turbo "identity" one look at the ATT leaves no doubt to even the basic Diesel novice, that "big thing is a turbo isn't it"

Not my purpose, just makes it nice and neat underhood. I could care less if people knew there was a turbo on there.

I may even delete the "turbo power" lettering as I find it a bit.....well...."juvenile"...

Did a few more little things today. Changed out my wiper arms for the 89 models and swapped out my broken cowl cover.

I swapped out the straight arm 98 wiper arms:

For the 89 "bent" arms:

I prefer the earlier models because they sit lower on the windshield when off (less in my sight line), they both sit level and even with the cowl (just a looks better to me thing), there's no loss of wiper coverage when on and they just plain ol' look cleaner than the 98 arms (at least they do to me).

The PO also really messed up the original wiper arms. They were beat on to the splines (hammer marks on the base) and so messed up I had to drill a hole in the face of each so I could get some penetrating fluid inside them. Then, it took an hour of wiggling, moving and prying to get both arms off. The "new" ones slipped right on and have a nice coat of anti-seize on the splines in case I have to remove them later on.

I also removed the cowl and did what I always do when I buy a new vehicle, wash out the plenum area at the base of the windshield. Why do I always do this? Well:

I've seen far too many vehicles rotted out in this area in my travels and it's a biotch to repair. Dirt holds water which makes rust, but wet bio mater is even worse. Wet bio makes heat while decomposing, which only accelerates the rusting process. So, I wash mine out every couple years and on every "new" vehicle that joins my stable.

I finished up with the new/old cowl cover and a few replacement spray nozzles.

One more small but significant change down, 5, 568, 798 to go........

GW great thread here! The EGT gauge you got, did it come with a thermocouple? You really cant beat the price even without the probe, but if it does come with it thats just like icing on the cake!

I actually changed my 94 wiper arms up to the 97's. I played with my wiper setup on the motor to bring them nice and low even with the newer style arms. There is a better wiper blade selection for the newer arms, plus i can now get Bosch icons.

Meh, different strokes....

I've never had an issue getting good blades for my 89 arms either.
