One ohmmeter probe is on the gearbox housing, the second probe is on the solenoid contacts

No readings When putting one probe on gearbox and other prob on a contact. Tried both contact terminals to make sure

It’s good that there are no indications, and the wires should not have insulation damage.

Apply 12 volts to the solenoid and it should click. Try measuring the current consumption of the solenoid. With a resistance of 5.5 Ohm the current should be 2.18A. and at 6.8 Ohm 1.84 A. If the voltage is 12 volts.

Does it matter what contact on the solenoid I put 12 Volts to ?

The solenoid has two contacts, one contact is negative from the battery, connect the plus of the battery to one of the multimeter probes, connect the second multimeter probe to the second contact of the solenoid. In this case, the multimeter must be in current measurement mode and the probes must be included in the corresponding contacts of the multimeter. If there is a photo of your multimeter, I will tell you in more detail.

Do you have another multimeter? This one does not measure current. Or you need to purchase a shunt (a resistor with a very small resistance, for example 0.01 Ohm). I think the accuracy of your multimeter in resistance measurement mode is not very good.
