The Stealth BOMB'r is under the knife

Okay, here's todays work.

Still some not so sexy stuff.....had to finish the engine dolly.....but it's now a stand fit for a big boy motor.

There's also pics of the crank after the balancing.

And now, what ya actually want to see.....

Crank balanced, edges of the counter weights beveled, oil holes chamfered, journals polished.

Damn it!

Ran into a little snag.

One of the sets of connecting rod bearings is the wrong part.....the tang is on the wrong side.

Soooo......that kinda puts a damper on things.

Okay, other than the set back with getting one set of incorrect rod bearings, things went good today.

If it hadn't been for those incorrect bearings, the short block would have been done.

So, Monday I'll get the correct set overnighted and next weekend we should be stuffing the motor back in.

Here's todays progress.....

Sorry to hear about the delay Rich...but it's still looking sweet.
How long 'till she's breathing fire?? It's looking close, but you've got that sucker tore down to the nubs...

If it wasn't for the hiccup with the connecting rod bearings, the long block would have been done yesterday and I'd have been looking to fire up next weekend.

Other than some fittings for the trans line and finishing the lines for the fuel system, everything else is basically done.

If I get the new bearings on Tuesday, I'll have her stuffed back in by the end of the week.

Once it's all back in, I'll finish the fuel system and trans, run the power and close 'er up.

Not a whole lot exciting is gonna happen on it today.

I'm mostly going to work on the engine stand so it's self supporting and doesn't interfere with anything on the engine.

I'll probably put the adpater plate, starter, tone ring and crank damper on.

I may set the head in place so I can make the final cuts on the fuel supply lines and start working on the the returns, but otherwise, it's gonna be a lazy day today.

So much for my lazy Sunday.

Got the front pedestal done on the engine dolly, so it's complete. Works friggin great.

Got the drank damper and tone ring mounted, idler and fan pulley are on, engine adapter is on, starter is in, flex plate is loosely bolted on for now.

Here's the work on the front bracket for the engine stand.....

Started working the fuel lines to the CP3's today.

Need to get a few more AN fittings and adapters, but........

Mmmmmmm......sexy kinda.

So, here's the next item to work on......return fuel circuit.

It'll all be -6 line from the CP3's back to the OEM hard line at the frame rail.

For the whole system, it'll need....

10 ft of -6 line
8 straight hose ends
1 90* hose end
1 45* hose end
1 -6 t-fitting
1 -6 y-fitting
2 12mmx1.5 adapters
2 -6 tube adapters

Here's the general idea.....sorry about the picture, I was drawing it out so I could see all the parts.

Are you going with a Asus ECM or sticking with the stock and using a Smarty Rich?

Excellent work!

Excellent work!

I'm considering going to a Zeus ECM as one of the winter projects.

It's a rather large chunk of change and it also complicates the setup.

I want to make sure everything is up and running before I throw that in the mix.

It's defintely something I've been considering but it's $$$.

Alright, here ya go......

This is more along the lines of what I would have done if I hadn't been scribbling.

This is what the entire fuel system will look like when it's done.

WHEW HEW!

Rod bearings came in today and we made some good progress on the motor.

Rotating assembly is done. Just need to put the block stiffener, oil pickup tube and oil pan on the bottom.

The head gasket and rings are on and the head is set in place.

Everything rotates nice and freely.

Gettin' closer.

Dead even at .002" clearance on all the connecting rod bearings.....

Pretty new pistons.....

Oh man it is like Christmas everytime I open this thread. AWESOME!!! Thank you for sharing your build with us Rich.

Glad ya like it.

I'm hoping that it shows folks that you CAN do this stuff on your own.

Are there some specialized tools? Yeah, of course.

Is it anything that can be procured or borrowed? Absolutely not.

I hate hearing guys go, "Man, I wish I could do that."

YOU CAN! Ya just gotta get started.

Here's the progress today.

Got the head cinched back down.....

Rockers and pushrods are back in.

Gonna run the valves and set the lash, rotate the engine to make sure there are no clearance issues.

The rockers will come back out to put the injectors back in, but it's much easier to run the valves and check the clearance without having to fight the engines compression.

Once they go back in, the lash will get set again.

It's still gonna be the same valve cover, I just haven't decided if I want to do anything to it.

I had it all taped off to paint it, but then I didn't like that idea and said screw it.

I may just leave the valve cover as is.

I've seen the valve covers done before where they painted them the engine color, then highlighted the CUMMINS in a dark red. I think they makes them look nice as it is fairly easy to do and really makes it pop when you open the hood. Or you could smooth it off and go stealth with it with no lettering on it.

For some reason, when the hoods open, there ain't much stealth to it.....

):h

Actually, when it's at the local track, I almost always have the hood open. People look and see the top turbo and are like "Holy $h!t"......then I tell them to look underneath that.

Most folks miss the big turbo on the bottom.
