Alright, the motor is all buttoned up, except for the alternator and AC compressor.

She's full of oil, spun it over a few times tonight to make sure everything was good. Tomorrow we'll hook up the oil pressure gauge and spin it over on the starter to prime the system.

Once we see good oil pressure, it's time to stuff it back in.

Got a few small odds and ends to finish up, a few fittings in the fuel system and touching up a few parts, but otherwise it's about ready to go back in.

Probably the ONLY time you ever see clean oil in a Cummins.....

Holy crap...two turbos...did you have that before? And you were getting ok mileage before? This one doesn't look much like it's gonna be for mileage, but I thought I read you felt it was still going to be pretty good.

What a beast...I'd love to feel that one in the passing lane...

is that stock? looks like an exhaust pipe it's huge

Yup, that's stock.

Not much dainty on these things.

I'll get a few pics tomorrow for you to compare.....

I have a set of 350 SBC conencting rods, 454 BBC connecting rods, 5.9 diesel rods and top fuel rods.

I think you'll be surprised at what you see.

Yup, same set of twins that were on it before.

It'll still get good mileage......it'll likely get BETTER mileage than before.

A good cam makes a HUGE difference in these engines.

The stock cam is for emissions.....it chokes the crap out of the motor.

The two best things you can do on a 5.9 for mileage is 1 - bump up the timing and 2 - put in a hotter cam.

You and me both.

I'm so tired of looking at that enormous pile of parts sitting there.

Just for giggles, I'll have to take a picture of the 383 SBC that we have on the stand for size comparison. You really don't get a feel for how big these motors are until you put them into perspective with something that is, displacement wise, bigger than it.

Well, she's ready to go back in now.

Got the last bit of stuff tightened up today.

Just had to swap an AN fitting on the head and add a check valve to the system and it's all good.

Hooked up the battery and cranked her over to prime the oil pump.

Tomorrow it's getting stuffed back in.

Well, we got two things accomplished tonight......Jack and Squat.

I figured we'd put the motor in without lifting the cab a bit......yeah, that wasn't happening.

We wrestled with it for an hour or so and said SCREW IT....we'll pull the Chevelle off the lift tomorrow, lift the cab a few inches and drop the motor in.

It just wasn't wanting to play and I was in no mood to mess with it.

But, the rest of the gauges came in today, so it wasn't a total waste.

whats a decent cam for these motors? Ive thought of a cam upgrade...also about what it cost to do the upgrade?

For an all around cam, you won't go wrong with a Hamilton 181/210.

That's what SHOULD have come in them from the factory.

The one in mine is slightly bigger, 183/220.

Well, here's the progress.

Had to lift the cab about 4"-5" to get the motor to drop in without a fuss.

Engines in, fuel system is hooked up, EGT probes are in, water lines are hooked up, cab is bolted back down, front wheels are off.

Should go pretty quick from here.

The next major slow down will be running all the electrical.

Wow...you're doing some nice work there Roy...

That engine has some nice detail going and really looks like a monster in there.
I can't believe how it fills all that up.
