95 Chevy 1ton possible steering issues.

@FellowTraveler Nice setup! I'm defiantly gonna have to try rearranging my oil and tranny coolers to fit one of those in there!

I'm a little nervous about disconnecting the HB and dead heading my pump! they use this gauge testing the big rigs and stetting pressures on equipment hydraulic pumps. at least my head won't be under the hood when it cranks up lol

Need to know what pressure it is producing...

not really, just that it's been howling or whining ever since I flushed it and replaced hoses. supposed to be taking a family vacation trip the middle of next month to Rockport and I've got that dreaded thought in my head it's gonna fail while out there! I've been working to get all the bugs and kinks out before the trip it never was making this noise before. it's really been my luck with this truck. all the simple jobs have turned into a pile of sticks lately.

I'm still kicking my self for buying rebuilt junk, I'd have been better off picking parts from my local junk yard at this point lol

Its all a crap shoot. JY parts can be as problematic as some of the remanned stuff.
When components are available, I would rather rebuild what I already own.
Many of the components for the PS pumps are still available, new. Might have to be new old stock from ebay or some such but in my past experiences its better than trying to rely on some of the crap thats out there.

Just got back from running errands. I figured this thing is gonna nag me in my mind so I grabbed the gauge. disconnected the line going into the HB and hooked up to the gauge. and stuck the hose in a spot so in case it whipped out with the pressure (me being nervous and paranoid) cranked up the truck and looked at the gauge. 1700psi... and the pump didn't make any growling. hmm.

this is interesting to me. connected the line back to the HB and worked the steering and the growl came back.

ok, I guess since the pump is putting out more pressure than I expected and I'm stumped over it, Ill just leave it and let it howl till it dies i suppose.

so know HB needs some TLC. are the accumulators available for someone like myself to purchase and install if I were to pull the HB? or since the gold can has a service port on it. would I be able to take the truck somewhere locally to have it checked and possibly recharged? I know charging it is a dumb question but this is a new learning for me. I've replaced a lot of parts over the years but having the knowledge to rebuild things would be priceless!

I am not sure that the accumulator has such a charge.
I might be wrong but, I think it has a very powerful spring within ots bounds, when the truck is started, fluid pressure compresses the spring, when engine cuts out, a check valve closes trapping the pressure.
I am sure that there is specs on leak down time for the check ball.
Please, someone correct me if I am wrong.

It's making noise for a reason. Bearings, new vanes in a worn cavity, PS line on something transmitting noise to the cab. I would put the filter I recommended in the return line of the steering box.

Your gamble and I have listed the stakes of a PS glitter debris bomb going off. It can make noise for a long time and sound like a whiny FORD. This is if the GM firecracker alternator isn't screaming and drowning it out...

Nitrogen gas under pressure... Debris in check valve, lost it's gas charge, INOP just to make you do the job again.

That is high PSI and requires a good sized cooler...

I run two filters on my P/S returns to pump low side...

Makes me wonder if there's too much flow through the HB, creating a low pressure scenario which makes the pump growl
I can get some fittings to connect a gauge inline but I know we don't have a flow gauge here at work. I'll talk to one of the hodraulic shops and see if they have one possibly. what kind of pressures should I see with a gauge inline?

I'll also order a filter for the return PS hose and look into a larger cooler. braking seems to be ok now. allthough if I have my food on the pedal and shut the engine off, the pedal will fall to the floor. otherwise it stays at about half when holding it.

Generally,1.2K to 1.5k or 1.7k+ p/s performance psi & 2.0k to 3.0k psi @ caliper...w/foot into it.

what about power steering flows and pressures. the PS pump is what's howling. I think the larger wheel cylinders on the brakes took care of the stopping problem

when I connected a gauge to the pump outlet it deadheaded and held steady at 1700 psi and didn't seem to howl but that was at idle.
