What did you do with your GMT400 today...or yesterday....

I had to make a stop at the NAPA store today.
In comes the guy with the blocks and heads shop.
Mentioned to Him that I’ll be bringing Him some work.
He informs Me that He is not doing that anymore. He retired. 💩
The parts counter person informed Me that the Chevrolet dealer here has a full engine rebuild service, boring, grinding valves the entire works.
I called them and yes they do. He asked what engine ? Told Him a 6.5 diesel from My 2000 K3500. He told me that they would definitely be wanting to magnaflux those heads. So seems He might be some familiar with the 6.5.
He also stated that right now they are rebuilding heads and it will be a short while before they begin on the blocks again. HHHHMMMmmmm, wonder how much room they give Him to set up in ? He did tell me that measuring the bores to get the next over size would be no problem.
I had some machine work needed done tonight so had no time to begin cleaning components. Hope tomorrow after work will be different.

I would be cautious about letting some of the local dealerships do much on older rigs. I know it will be more time and cost, but why not let Chris have a go at it. you know it will get done right the first time!

Probably be the best thing to do.
Cost of freight would be great.
Wondering if I shouldnt just go with a new block from QSTuning and throw in one of those P400 rotating assembly kits and have it balanced.
Then all I’d need would be to have My heads worked over.

No 6.5 related parts were harmed….
That was probably Bill’s differential or the transmission jack that caught me not paying attention or pick something on BigT’s burb. Doesn’t quite rank up there with the cheek cut he got from the cross over though.

Top of my head is bald. Loaded with white and discolored scars. Looks like a road map of Germany or some other state/country with lots of roads. 😹😹😹

Pretty sure all of us should have our “heads worked over”…blunt force trauma worked over…for trying to keep these relics on the road. Not that it would dissuade us though

I don't think that's what Marty meant by having the head worked over.

And that is why we always had to wear hard hats safety glasses and hearing protection.

Do when we bumped out noggins, it just jammed our heads down betwixt our shoulder blades.

I wonder how many neck injuries that caused?

Leave a truck door open, come out from under it, go to stand up and bump the knoggin on the under side of the door.
That puts a kink in the kneck.
I always hit my head way more wearing a hard hat.
Baseball caps is the worst.
I keep several of those flimsy cotton welding skull caps handy.
Keeps the grease and grime offa the top of the head and their aint no bill obstructing overhead vision.

Between the valves of one cylinder was not cracked.
This is no. 1

And number 8 cylinder.

I dont know if I can afford to fix this engine, or truck.
The truck is fine but with the cracked heads its getting way in, shall we say, over my head.
I never imagined that the heads would be cracked. This engine has never used much prestone. Maybe about every six months had to add a cup or two.

From what I have read this is a common thing. There is a fix for it with inserts iirc. I personally would run them if there weren't any coolant issues, but lets see what others say. Maybe the heads off the engine BigT pulled are in better shape?

Question: are both heads the same, say two engines the left heads are fine and the right's have cracking. can a left head be used on the right side?

Yes, heads can interchange left to right.
I thought about the stitch and weld, or whatever they are called. My problem is thinking that the heads can crack out into the valve seats.
I think I have enough room in My CC to just order in a new Optimizer enjun from quadstartuning.
I got a quote and I think it will just squeak in without going over any service fees. I will call the CC Co tomorrow to be sure. Might be a chance that they would increase the credit limit to accommodate the purchase too. If not then it can wait until after the third of October, payment due date, then I know I will be under the limit as I make quite a substantial payment every month.

That crack on the No. 8 cylinder actually has a chunk or two missing from out of the crack. Like it will be about near shattering along the line.

Marty, if you do order a new engine, save on your old block! they are hard to find without cracks the 6.2 I have is cracked. the 93 is unknown but has a 99 engine. and my 95... well even if it's not cracked there, the starter mount point is cracked LOL

I am curious though on your block about bore measurements if the wear is worth having bored. wonder if it's within tolerance to just have it honed and re-ringed pistons even coated pistons from Chris with gapless rings. iirc he mentioned that coating the pistons would bring a slightly worn engine back to life with some gapless rings. how much blowby did it have if any?

if BigT's old heads are good you might have enough goods to build on your block and make a sound engine
