Resurecting New Engine

Did some cleaning up on the plow the other day. Next summer i will remove all the paint and patch the few holes. The plow is a 1994, so not bad for survivng this salt belt all these years!

Some pictures of replacing the idler arm bracket and idler arm itself. Found a nice little rot hole in the frame, hopefully it will make it through this winter so i can patch it next year. Will regularly spray used oil on it to keep it wet.

Still have some slop in the steering, im thinking one of my tie rods is on its way out. Ive been replacing steering parts out the wazoo the past few years. Plowing takes a beating on any truck.

Wish i had the time or i would have bought MOOG parts off line. My passenger front tires was starting to wear badly.

Here is what my weekend consisted of. Went to start the truck and heard a loud metal to metal squeek under the hood. Took my belt off to find that my A/C compressor pulley had siezed up. Good thing i bought a bypass kit from DavesDiesel (cant quite remember the name sorry). Its very hard to find a bypass kit for the 6.5L, so he fabricated one up and i bought it 4 months or so ago just for this instance. Guess its the start to removing the A/C stuff for the cummins inter-cooler.

Then on my way to the girlfriends brothers house to reload shells i smelled a burning rubber smell. Pulled over and it was my fender flare and mudflap down on my tire. Ripped it off for now. I hate Central New York.

Maybe I should send you my 95. I am scrapping it due to rocker rot and a wrecked bedside. Has a rusted through cross member at the spare tire carrier. It would honestly be a blessing compared to yours.

You have more ambition than me to keep a rusted rig running! Hope you can patch it back together!

Surprisingly, my rockers are the only place where there aren't any holes. The paint is peeled off and i repaint it every year to try and keep them covered. I would love your truck.

Really what i want is a 95 K2500/K3500 long bed extended cab with a blown engine or two piece crank so i can put mine in it. I really want to move up to the newer interior and i really want an extended cab. Right now that's the only way id look into another truck.

Up here there really isn't much choice against the rust, nothing you can do to stop it; no matter how hard you try nothing works.

Will keep on plugging. Need to get my brothers dead car out of my garage so i can begin work on this.

I was hoping for a 95 crew cab dually when I found the 00. I guess I don't really need selectable tunes in a tow pig like that. The low mile chassis sold me on it. Not sure if I want to keep it cloth seats or put my 95's leather captains in it. My 6 setting chip will go nicely in my 94 with a reflash.

Maybe I can cut you a deal on my 95' k1500. Same color and everything...just needs a good engine. I absolutely hate to sell it/part it out but if it was going to a good home I would think about it....

I really like the look of those rims on your truck....and spray that entire frame down with a diesel/used oil mix with a pump sprayer. Not much else seems to help here in the north east

I think i have seen pictures of your truck. Its a short box extended cab though correct? If it was a long box extended cab i prolly would be very interested in possibly working something out.

Where i sit now is my trucks tranny is about gone. If i could get a whole other truck for less than the cost of the tranny it may be the better way to go as my truck needs so much other work.

Correct. It is a ex cab short bed Z71. The only rot is on the very bottom of the door lips. Body looks nice but has a few dents here and there. Frame is good but could use some sanding and paint in the rear as it is starting to rust from sitting. It has been stored indoors for about 2 years now but it is gonna need some work other that just a motor...brake and fuel lines and prob brakes from sitting etc. Definetly will need some TLC but is a unique fun to drive truck.

Chassis has high miles 230K but the front end was just gone thru and is very tight. New monroe gas shocks all the way around, Heath GL4 chip, full leather power interior, boost and pyro guages, tow hitch etc.. Trans was fine but I was going to go thru it just to be safe. Also has a 7.5' fisher plow.

If you are interested, just remember this is not just gonna be drop in a motor and go, it is gonna need some work and a good cleaning! I just cant seem to find the time for another project, especially that I already have a good reliable truck already. If you are interested make me an offer, id like to see it go to a good home rather than me part it out.

PM'ed

Here are some recent pictures. Truck is in the garage waiting for me to start ripping out the transmission. A tiny load of scrap in the back for its first maiden voyage. Also a little refresh of a WH1C turbo. And what 3 years of CNY salt does to your sanded, primed and 3x painted exhaust. And the current mileage on an all original plowing transmission. This 4L80E definately fufilled its duties.

What tranny are you putting back in? Did you find an NV4500? Keep us posted on the WH1C, I have mine in the shop still and am getting closer to having my 93 ready to handle some upgrades.

Tanner,
I have not found a thing in the 5-speed swap category. Even used the transmissions go for 600 if you can find one. Plus id have to find all the other necessaries. Just do not have the time for that. So the plan is to rebuild the 4L80E do some body/frame repairs and add the turbo. Working on getting a transmission jack.

My NV4500's are costing about 800 each. to rebuild between synchros, bearings, and a couple hard parts. I still have. To getwflyheel, clutch and slave cylinders too.

Started working on the truck the other day. Its going to be a slow project. Im to the point where i need to get my exhaust cross over off but its looking as if its going to put up a fight. This crossover is 4 years old, and was removed and cleaned when i rebuilt my engine 3 year ago. Im afraid im going to break the bolts. Ive plastered them with WD-40 and am wondering what the best technique would be for breaking them loose (not in half). Also will the transmission slide out with the torque converter bolted to the flywheel? The reason i have to remove the cross over is i cant get the inspection cover off. Another issue i ran into was my front driveshaft was siezed. So it was a bear to get out. Hopefully more to come soon.

Edit: Check out the transmission mount too. Or whats left of it. A few months ago the truck started leaking massive amounts of fluids.

Yeah but I wouldn't. You'd risk breaking the pump. $$ added: the cover if not removed can't get past the flexplate, can it?

IIRC the cover came off my '93 with an OEM x-over..

Rust.. What rust?

Ahh crap. The cross over is a aftermarket 2.25 inch unit. So basically the cross over needs to come out. Plus i dont want it to get any worse. I guess im gonna try an impact first. Hope for the best.

If the transmission was out i could have enough room to pull the cover out and then remove the torque converter. And the opposite to install.
