Resurecting New Engine

Made some progress tonight. Got the cross-over off with the help of air tools. Snapped one bolt off in the manifold. What is the best way to extract? Dril, easy out? I dont want to mess up the original threads.

Got the torque converter unbolted from the flywheel.

Removed the transmission shifter rod assembly, broke all the small clips holding them together. Will have to find a very small awl to punch them out of the rods.

What is the reccomended way of transmission removal? Should i do it with the t-case removed first or without? How many bolts hold the transmission to the t-case? Looks like the bolts are hard to get to. Especially covered in dirt oil and grease.

Has anyone found an easy way to remove the transfer case linkage from the transfer case? Ive tried with a large flat head screw driver, im afraid im gonna slip and nail something with my hand. Also tried ot get in there with channel lock pliers and just cant seem to get a good grip on it.

Basically all thats left is to un-hook electricals, remove transfer case linkage, unbolt from engine and possibly remove t-case first.

I wasn't able get my twisted-off bolts out of the manifold. I found two manifolds for like $100 from a local wrecked. You can try welding a nut onto the snapped stud ...

Oh thats not good. I hope i can find a way. I dont have a welder so thats out.

Unfortunately no smoke wrench either. My dad does have a set of easy outs so i guess thats the first try. My brother has used them with no luck.

Be careful with the ez out. I snapped 2 of them trying to drill the studs out. Maybe take it into a machine shop?

Made a bit more progress last night. Got the bolts out of the transmission crossmember to the fame. Also got all of the bolt out of the bellhousing to engine.

Left: Unhook tranmission fluid lines, dipstick tube, transfer case linkage and the bolts for the transmission mount.

Transmision is out. Man what a bear. I couldnt for the life of me get the transmission and transfercase out at the same time. Just could find the right angle. Ended up removing the transfer case then the transmission. I have a few pictures that i will post when i get on my 'puter. Going to take a break for a few days body is pretty sore. Ever since my accident concrete floors and me dont get along. I borrowed a pressure washer and will have to get all this stuff cleaned up before it goes back in.

Edit: Here are the pictures., i didnt wait long enough for them to load on the previous post.

I've seen similar images on my barn floor lately. I didn't use any floor jackswhen I did mine and benchpressing a tranny isn't fun, they don't balance well.

I hope you don't have nearly the same issues im having with reliable parts being available.

Yeah i am worried about what parts to get that will last as well as the oem stuff did. I think i got the torque converter down to trans-star. But the rebuild kit i have no clue whats good or best for a total rebuild. Im sure chinese parts suck but all ive seen is chinese kits.

Ive made 2 phone calls to friends saying they each know a guy who rebuild transmissions but no call back from either yet...

Well just got a text message from a friend who owns a shop where we have our vehicle work done. When he has dud transmissions he sends them to a local guy who cuts him deals. He quoted 600 for a basic rebuild including parts. More if hard parts are needed. Waiting on the other friend.

It's a little late but 50% Acetone and 50% ATF mixed is as good a penetrating oil as any.

Actually someone told my dad that and hes got a small bottle of it made. Not sure if he has used it yet. I put WD-40 on the exhaust but nothing else needed it, the underside of the truck was plastered with ATF. So i guess i got lucky in that aspect.
