Replacement turbo

Looks like he is using the factory intake host. He just has the CDR intake connection plugged and it appears his CDR is vented to atmosphere.

As for the A-team turbo...tis a thing of beauty. I got a bit teary eyed just looking at it. *sniff*

2 Questions for you fellows.

Is the CDR vented to atmosphere?

Is it louder or quieter than a stock turbo cranked up?

This looks like a solution when a turbo croaks or for you heavy pullers. More power, lower EGT's and better mpg?

Yes to number one, my intake looks like the day it was new, no oil mess inside at all.

The Turbo is no louder than a stock Turbo when cranked up, it does have a spot around 5 to 8 psi where it gets a little loud, Turbine Doc would best be able to answer that, he has been using the A-Team Turbo for about 8000 miles now.

Yes to number three, it does all of the above, and for about the same money as a new or rebuilt GM 8, which would you want?
Wait I forgot the exhaust gets louder and distinct under load when using the A-Team Turbo, I don't know if this is good or bad:thumbsup:

IMO the mpg gain almost makes it worthwhile to outright replace it, even a moderate tow-er will benefit as from what I see running to GA & back last month with IC bypassed you won't need an IC, I've yet to see over 198 IAT and that was hauling tail on a 90 F-ish day running 80+ mph won't say how much 80+ but it was up there :D to get 8-9 psi boost , let's put it this way I had to back out as there wasn't enough free highway to not become a hazzard to all other traffic and trees were a running blur

TD, I think I remember you said you were gonna test/run w/ & w/o IC. Did you and how much of a difference did it make? I know you just said it wasn't nessessary, but how much did it help or did it hurt? I'm just asking because I can have a hanging IC with tubes at my door for around $200 through the auction site.

Thanks for being our test mule,

No discernable difference in mpg, haven't made enough runs to know if mpg difference mapybe 1mpg less is from no IC or lighter right foot, there is slightly better spool up without the IC connected.

I have not towed without IC, but have run fast without it which is similar power required to pull a load as mentioned earlier max I've seen is 198 IAT which is up from 30 over ambient I see with the IC,

Knowing what I know now, I'd run with this turbo to see if it didn't do everything I needed doing without IC, and add it later if need be,

Some have suggested 150ish IAT as a optimum for mpg on the 6.5. I'm running 138, look at it this way some new & improved turbos are $1500+ I looked at the Aurora turbo as a possibility and a couple of Turbonetics; Aurora was $5K Turbonetics was $3K IIRC.

ATT has the power most need plus if you still decide you need a IC, shucks what one popular vendor charges for their IC kit you can have a better turbo and still have enough left over in budget to get the auction site IC IF you think you still need it.

I, for one, am sold on the ATT.

Just wish the bank account felt the same way. :cryin:

I'm sold too

But will wait until mine is toast. Not sure, but will assume I have the GM-4 on my 1995. When it gives up the ghost, I'll go A-Team. I'm running out of go fast parts to buy!

Here is my plan sell my GM-8's to help offset the price I paid for my TDO-7 and the ATT, burb will get the TD07 when Heath gets finished playing with it for me to see if there are any program tweaks that will help out with the way these high cfm/lower boost turbos build boost, the truck will keep it's ATT,

The "grocery gitter" (burb) will get the slightly less agressive one. That is unless one of ya'll wants to make an offer later on the TDO-7 at used discount and I'll buy a ATT kit for the burb also, PM me inf interested but give me a couple of months as I still have it at Heath so it's not really ready for sale.

Hey TD or Slim, do you have any info on EGT temps, before and after ATT? I would have to assume (no wait, presume) that with the lower IAT's that this would in turn, lower the EGT's some. Again, thanks in advance,

I did a "fun run" Sat. no data taking just drive, weather was perfect a day you wished you were driving a convertable & top was down, anyway just driving not much traffic, I was able to run 100mph a spell, it was a beautiful thing, max EGT 750, boost 5psi, backpressure 7psi. Oh and the Stroke running beside me could not keep up, he had a speed governor I don't :D we were entering 2 lane on ramp at same time, I sped up to get past a semi, he tried to give chase was holding his own in trail about 3 lengths back, but ran out of top end.

Somebody asked what does the turbo sound like, well if you are old enough to remember what the sound of a set of a carbs vacuum secondaries kicking in sounds like, that was very close to the sound when I kicked it up a notch from 70 mph @ 3 psi boost, the telltale "bawooooo" sound until getting to about 90 then just sound of air rolling past the truck faster, I was "one with my ride" big grin as it was all running as it should, finished the weekend last nite with a 450 mile drive from Ms to Ga.

I appreciate posts like TD's (and others) that highlight the best aspects of our trucks. Especially when we are sharing information about performance upgrades. :nanawrench:

Sometimes the sheer volume of ignorant, negative statements about 6.5TDs casts a shadow over my otherwise strong positive regard for these trucks.

Thanks for the post!

After all these years its great to see you still enjoying/appreciating the ol' 6.5.
