Replacement turbo

Here is some run data I have been collecting for a while, data collection has improved as I've added gauges, some data early in sheet is older stuff with early HP program and GM-8 turbo with a TM on it.

I think we have found a new "sweet spot" 2100-2200 for the 6.5 with this turbo, I made a run last Friday Waycross Ga to Ms 450 miles on single tank of fuel, avg 70mph, when I filled up Sunday it took 23 gal to get to full a nozzle click stop 3x full, same distance traveled previously would require 1 1/4 of a tank, on return to Waycross I was holding similar mpg until I started collecting data above 75 and doing throttle push to 100mph & hill climbs.

IMO this is the turbo GM should have put on the truck to start with.

What you see on last page are 2 data sets one with IC plumbed in, and on the return drive I bypassed the IC and straight plumbed turbo to the engine taking IC out of the loop, notice IAT even with full load on isn't mega hot, so I'm thinking this turbo with WMI might be the better ticket than IC. Spool up has slightly improved without IC, and black exhaust at hard acceleration clears quicker.

On the drive over I called Slim to get his thoughts on it, his IC is different then mine and may have better flow, his IC enters from 1 end and exits from the other, the IC I'm running (Kennedy/Spearco) enters and exits from center of the IC, so I'm theorizing that his IC may flow better than mine, which is possibly in addition to him having a 5 speed manual may be why I by "seat of pant dyno" saw/felt more turbo lag then he seemed to be having.

Turbine Doc,

What kind of file is that? I've tried to open it and just get some funky stuff.

Thanks. Andrew

Xcel spread sheet another piece of interest I wanted to add was my truck weight 6480 was base weight of the truck when I 1st got it/weighed it, now have 300-ish# of bumper, had 50 gal of fuel in my bed aux tank, 100# of tools in bed tool box, and 500-ish # in cab including me & cargo, next time I get near scale I'll run across it.

Truck with that weight is pretty zippy still, not a sportscar acceleration, but for full size Diesel it's not bad either.

So what your saying, Doc, is that even without an intercooler, a guy could see great improvement. How about towing, with stock programing and the A-team, would exhuast temps be a problem? Would it be essential to have egt guage? I know we should have one, but is it essential? Is there a chance that the old 6.5 won't defuel with this new turbo. Thanks for the data.

Hello TD any way you could turn the data sheet into a PDF file. I don't have Excel.

You could always download openoffice .org. I just tried it myself the other day. I haven't had much time to play with it, but it is free (open source) and it has a spreadsheet program that you can use to read excel files.

I have a 3.5" stainless DP in my truck that I built. It took a lot of time and tig work to get it to fit and not hit the frame or engine. Totally worth it though, my max EGT went down over 100 F and I think I picked up about 1 MPG because now I see about 380 miles to a tank.

That is my assumption, (still collecting info to bolster that assumption) I pushed as hard as I room on the highyway to do with a truck that isn't towing, and I don't think it will need intercooling. for vast majority of folks out there. they probably will not need intercooling, or can suffice with a WMI system and a small tank as you would not be spraying very oftem.

The Excel 2003 Workbook that Tim posted has 4 separate worksheets.

Here they are in PDF: (but I second the idea of getting yourself OpenOffice)

Great work, guys!

Thanks for posting the results in PDF form, Open Office is a great program, I also would recommend it to anyone running Microsoft that doesn't have or can't afford Microsoft's office program. ):h
