Sorry guys, I didn't get notifications regarding your replies! Yeah I was pretty surprised to see the numbers myself when I replayed the videos - I haven't felt very impressed with the acceleration lately myself. I'm guessing the super cold air did have something to do with it though.....but I'll take it!
I got the new cartridge installed last night. I've only driven 10 miles with it so far and I've taken it easy that whole time so the new bits can get used to each other. So far the highest boost I have seen while driving is 8 psi. I do have some initial impressions though:
1. The exhaust is a lot quieter. This is great actually....it wasn't really loud in the cab before, but after long trips it would get a little annoying (I guess I'm starting to get old). As I've modded this truck, I've been a little disappointed with how I've affected the driving experience - yes I've added more performance, but at the expense of comfort in some regards. So when I make a mod that improves the comfort of the drive it makes me very happy.
2. The boost is now higher at 60mph. When I took it for the first drive last night, I did a couple miles of steady state 60mph driving and the boost gauge registered 2.5psi when it was registering 1psi before. This is the opposite of what I expected with the 10 blade turbine, so I'm guessing that must be just how much more air the billet compressor wheel slings? I was hoping to run lower boost at cruise because I reckoned that would give me better efficiency. I'm just guessing though I guess. I'm taking a trip to Detroit in a week to go to Autorama so I'll see what kind of mileage I get on that trip. Also I'll keep an eye on cruise boost as everything breaks in - if anything I would expect it to go up, but we'll see what actually happens, if anything.
3. The building of boost seems more linear. The lower boost that I have been creating seems to come on at more of a steady state now and in fact I feel like I have more boost at lower rpm now. When I went up a couple hills it seemed to bog down less when going up those hills. It could just be me though, I'll know more as I go on a couple other roads.
4. ......I feel like there was a 4th thing I observed, but now I can't remember it. If I think of it I will post it up.
And finally, it's a good thing I did this project - the old cartridge was shot! The first turbo died a premature death from the coolant in the oil.....that makes sense. This one has been on for a year, with frequent oil changes, and it still died. It was a different brand from the first....and from what other 6.5 guys have run so I guess it's not a great brand. Not sure. Anyhow check out this video.....
Here's a pick of the billet beauty in its new home. I can't wait to drive this thing some more!
