I thought the cooling tabs were supposed to be for cracks in the cylinder walls? Wouldn't be near as much pressure there as with a head gasket. Piston should be covering the crack when the big bang occurs.

All second-hand purchases carry some risk. The risk can be mitigated (somewhat) by checking things out (like we all know). If you purchased through Ebay, then I believe that the Ebay 'protection' policy would cover up to 20K worth of fraud. It might be worth it.

My Tahoe arrived with several dead items that the PO didn't note - dead wastegate controller, dead blower fan, messed up cooling system, 1/2 the lights were burned out, various stereo pieces which were in the photos were removed before shipment.

In my case, everything was minor - fix the actuator, replace fan, replace lights, put in electric fan, etc. After 4-5 years, it's clear its a fine vehicle, but at the time, I was rather peeved, and felt a bit ripped off.

If I hadn't run into a lot of you guys, I would have been up a creek without a paddle.

Check it as best you can, and just best judgment. You mitigate risk, but there always remains some. Remember - with a used vehicle - you're buying what life is left in it.

Probably no to both. I doubt he's going to let me pull glow plugs and as far as the interstate I don't believe the truck is registered. but I'll check. I'm gonna give it a huge looky see again today. The title thing is bohering me too. I may try to give him a check for deposit instead.

OK Update. The guy who posted the neg about the seller has still not responded and O contacted him again. I talked to the guy selling the truck and asked him about it. He said the guy was from west Va and never even saw the truck. At the guys request he took the truck to Firestone for a complete diagnostic and that is where they came up with a/c recharge and tailight issue. He said the guy basically wanted his deposit back and tried to back out then posted neg feedback before anything even happended. He told me to come over and leave my truck and take it whereever I want or drive it on the hwy etc. He said he will have the title in had within two weeks and he just wants to make sure I won't changre my mind between now and then so I'm going to paypal the deposit instead of cash so I can reverse the chagres if the title issue drags on. I'm going over at 4pm to check it out again. It's hard to give something close scrutiny when you know you want it. I'm going to write up a check list now so I don't go braindead when I get there. Between now and then any ideas you guys have of what I should be looking at so I don't forget.
what I checked out so far:
Antifreeze looks clean and was at proper level(dexcool)
Oil looked celan
No apparent blowby with oil cap off and running
Truck feels smooth
PMD stock location so somewhere along the line it will be an issue. Glows possibly weak as cold it was a tad stubborn(no worse than my Tahoe)
Oil cooler lines leaking at crimps(typical) they are not that bad yet.
No apparent oil around turbo .
CDR looks clean
Tranny fliud smeeld ok but I'm going to check it again.
Front axle had no apparent leaks
Front end felt tight.
What am I missing ?

I don't have a tech2 or auto eng but I do have an OBD2 scanner. I'll scan for historic codes.
No other apparent oil leaks other than lines.

ask how bad the wreck was...maybe for the receipt of what was done...if major ask if you could take it to a frame shop to have it checked to make sure the frame isn't tweaked...

He said it got side swipe and he showed me the rr quater. it looked fine to me. Truck drive down the road staright. I did crawl under and ;look at the frame where the bumper brackets go, usually body shps(I used to work in one) will chince there. No welds look touched. If it was a front end the frame didn't get touched and the body lines are all good.

The guy offered to let me have the truck till tommorow and the guy who posted the neg never responded. If the guy was hiding something I doubt he would offer that. I'm meeting him tommorow to give a deposit until the title comes.

When you Paypal him use a credit card not debit or transfer from checking account. If you need to dispute the charge it is alot easier to call your credit card company and go through them first than to mess with Paypal.

Not only is there no rust, the guy had the whole truck painted underneath with chassis saver. There isn't even any rust on the fuel lines. That's unheard of for a new england truck.

well things are not looking up for the Burb. I went back over there today with a clearer head and looked at the truck again as a mechanic, not someone drooling over it. It unfortunatley IMHO needs a transmission. In FIRST GEAR ONLY it has a fairly decent howl/whine that sounds like bad planetary set. It only does it in first. I could hear it clearly over the motor which should not be. It goes away as soon as the truck hits second gear or is not as bad if you take off in 1st very gently. I drove both my Tahoe and pickup the same way and no noise at all. He is going to take it to my local tranny shop for second opinion but I am sure that is what's wrong. Cheapest price I got for my Tahoe when I "thought" the tranny was gone was about 1500$+ but that is without wasted hard parts. A planetary I would think will add a minimun of 3-400$ to the bill. I am still not against buying the truck but not for his asking price so I left off to see what tranny shop says and then if he wants I would be willing to negotiate. I have never heard a healthy 4l80e whine/howl in any gear let alone 1st. Aside from that I could find no other issues with the truck.
