I got this thing come up about auto updates....

"Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830)............"

do I want that??

Yes. That's a Microsoft Update, and you want those to happen.

Here is Microsoft's explanation page on it, if you're interested.

Jim

PS - how's the pop-ups? Still gone?

OK Ill accept it then. How about something called java? Do I want that update too?

No pop ups for a long time now!:cheers2:

Do i want to re-new this as well??

Your subscription has expired. To ensure that your computer is fully protected, renew the subscriptions for these programs:

McAfee VirusScan

Bound to be some suggestions from the other emmbers about this one, but...

Changing virus-scanners is sometimes kinda demanding, and McAfee is normally somewhat difficult to uninstall properly when it's an OEM install (like yours is).

I don't personally LIKE McAfee, but it does work, for the most part. If you don't know how to uninstall it and go after something else, I'd just renew it.

That's my 2 bits, for what it's worth.

I got busy and sorta forgot about this...
Went to update it and they want 70 bucks for a year... damn.
Cant I just hire the neighbor kid to sit here and watch it? ha ha

Justin, if you don't want to renew the McAfee at that price, post back here and we'll help you through uninstalling it and installing a free antivirus program.

If you was me, what would you do? The money isnt really the issue..
The way you said, it seems as though it would be hard for someone not smart with puters like me to un-do, I feel like Ive wasted yalls(manly you and Ozzies) time already.. :(

Not an issue, Justin, we volunteered. Let's git 'er done...

You're running Windows XP, right?

You really gotta stop surfing those porn sites...:chairshot::sad6:

I haven't read where things are at currently yet...what browser are you using? Firefox is recommended as it has some built in security against those critters. The Internet is getting to be a dangerous place these days.
The bad guys know how to do all kinds of nasty stuff to snare you.

Thats the thing Ozzie, I havnt been on any sites other then my regular forums and some sites ordering things for wifey for Christmas.. Im on firefox now, I was getting random pop ups in new tabs...

Ok...Firefox is good...one other thing we need to make sure of - are you using Spybot Search & Destroy? That will at least make you give permission to anything try to make changes to your registry. Make sure you enable the Tea Timer - that's the monitoring system.

Are you using that? If not, go get that one and install it right away.

Where do I get one? I dont think I have it but Ill get one.
I run a scan with Macfee and super anit spiware and all is good now so far

See how the name is underlined in my last post? Click on it and then download the file (on right side). Then go to where you saved it and install it (make sure to enable TeaTimer). Do an update after installing, and then run a scan.
I have a brand new install that I'm working on and running my first scan with it right now - it already found something too. That program is my first one I use.
