OK I am at my wits end with this rag and the torch is idling ... I can't get the speedo working. I replaced the VSS(60$) and still no worky. The wiring looks good. What the hell oculd be wrong with it ? Does this truck have an ecm ? it has an OBD1 plug but that could just be for the brakes. Anyone got a wiring diagram for a 93 ? Should there be a SES light ? I tried using an OBD1 reader to flash the ses light but it doesn't have one. There is an ecm/ign fuse. it's good. Any ideas ?

What about the speed sensor? Where is it in an NV4500 4x4 setup? Could it be toasted? I know where the speedo cable goes in my K-5 is at the rear output of the transfer case. I'm guessing it'd be the same for your truck.

The ECM would strictly be for any emissions crap, which is doesn't have because it's a 3500. back in 88 or so even the 6.2s in 1/2 tons had a "SES" light down on the bottom of the dash close to the steering column and basically a dumb computer behind the glove box for the Emissions crap(EGR and such). I've seen 2 K-5s 6.2s with them. One in person, and one in pictures.

Doubt there's an ECM but the ABS was read from the same connector for OBD I as well(i know you can do it with OBD II).

Perhaps the speedometer is just burnt out? It is electronic after all. I had the speedometer take a shit in the beater car at one point. The ECM hated that because it thought i was trying to "get around" the odometer(odometer fraud wise), so the damn engine barely ran.

VSS is new. BK95 got me thinking. I don't have a tach. I wonder if someone stuffed a gasser cluster in this thing. That would explain the alt and temp gauges being inaccurate.

The clusters for gas and diesel are the same. only difference is the unleaded or diesel painted on the face. The printed circuit on the back of the cluster is identical. I had a diesel cluster and a gasser cluster without a tach side by side same part number on the printed circuit. The connector to the cluster is suspect as is the speedometer itself or the white draac? box.[converts vss signal to speedometer signal]

Looked last night. Says diesel. I had already pulled it and looked at the plug as well as the circut. It looked ok but I could pull it again and re examine more closely. I am thinkming that Drac box but should this truck have an ses light ? I tried a obd1 code reader that flashes the ses light and it did nothing and I have no ses light when you turn the key on. I even for the heck of it connected GMTDScan thinking it might read the codes if any. Could not connect.

Here's a scan of the speedo troubleshooting from the 93 gm manual

I'm confused. What is the vehichle speed sensor buffer ? Is that the thing I changed on the tailshaft of the Transer case ? I thought that was a Vehichle Speed Sensor or is it the white box under the glove box ? BTW that part from GM is 200$ so I'd rather be sure.

Did you check the bulb for the SES light? The light should come on as a test when the key is turned before start..

Im pretty sure it should have a ses light, my brother had a 92 that did. I would switch the bulbs a round with a know working bulb from another part of your cluster then try the scanner again... Pretty positive you should have an functioning ses light...

No it was a 350 2wd auto. But it also had a cluster without a tach..

92 350 would have been fuel injected.... so it definitely would have an ECM.... A mechanical 6.5 on the other hand probably wouldn't, just my guess.

Pull the glove box and look for an ECM, that will tell you for sure...... I can't think of anything the ECM would actually run on your truck.

Wow, now that i think about it thats so true. What business would an ECM have in your truck.... Totally forgot DB2... Im so used to playing with the DS4...

Well, I went out to the 92 (dads C3500HD in sig, 6.5L 5spd 2wd) and we got low coolant, glow plugs, battery, and check guages. no check engine, or service engine light. so either we are in the same boat, or we dont have such lamps!
