What did you do with your GMT400 today...or yesterday....

Yup, that’s it. He has a thrust bearing that is reducing a lot of the work. I remember talking to him about it and he spent some descent time tracking down where to get the big metric threaded rod and finding the proper thrust bearing.

There is an old trick of make the stud, then take multiple flat washers and cover in grease, but obviously compared to a bearing… haha.

A length of light duty chain, a bolt to fit through it and through some available hole in the flex plate that the bolt will fit through, then an anchor of similar to the engine or frame or ? ? ? ? Makes for a mighty steady crankshaft anchor

I'm hoping that it's not so tight that it makes for a press on fit. I have seen some that fit so tight you think something is wrong and then others that you can slide on and off by hand. sounds like this one is a super tight fit.

I thought it worth the funds to rent the removal/install tool from Leroy.

I was looking online and found a thread on DP where a fella got a puller from autozone he rented and the bolt for the puller it’s self was the right thread for the crank. He gave the part number so I looked up our local autozone to see if they had it in stock. Yup that have it for $27 to rent or buy. The fella used the puller threading the shank into the crank and spun the piece you used to do the pulling to install the balancer. Well it’s worth a shot. There’s nothing else available close to me without having to order it and wait lol

The wifee and I are out at a banquet for work celebrating my 15 year anniversary at work. I’ll post the part number soon

I rented the puller/install tool from the parts store (O'Reilly's IIRC). Worked great both directions until I couldn't get the pully lined up with the rest waterpump, steering pump etc. The the bolt and impact driver to get things finished off. "Small bites."

Here's the tool that was posted on DP. it's the only one anyone happens to have in stock locally to me, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will work to install the balancer and I can get the job done this weekend without having to order anything and waiting another week!

and the thread where I found it looking for something that had the m16x1.5 thread. the tool is only a puller kit not the install but they are saying the bolt for the puller is the right thread.

I have installed several speedy sleeves over the years, watched others install them.
Following the directions to a T. Dont remember the time frame or miles run, had several of the seals start leaking.
Pull the suspect component and the sleeves would be cut back to the original shaft, yoke or HB snout.
I always figured it was caused from the seal gripping the sleeve a little tighter and cutting through.
That was always with the item receiving the sleeve chucked in the lathe, spun and dressed with 320 grit emery cloth so everything was clean and dry. Been too many years so I dont remember any of the rest of the steps to install a speedy sleeve. Seems red loktite may have been involved.
From what I remember it was a special seal that came with the speedy sleeves.

I had enough new bad seals to not fully blame the one that was bad almost immediately on the speedy seal.
Had a friend look things over and he said he also thought it was just a bad seal.

The next seal installed lasted about a decade until the 96 Suburban got ran out of oil.
Bout brought a tear to my eye

Well folks. It’s apart. Pulled the fan and shroud like y’all said. I ended up having to get my son to help while I held the pump pulley and he used a 5ft cheeter pipe on the fan clutch to break it loose! Dan this is the one thing I hated about these spin on clutches.

Got the pulley out and started setting up the new puller on the HB. Well the HB practically came off in my hands without really needing the puller!

Here’s some pics of the carnage. I’m getting ready to replace the seal and clean things up for the install

Clean that mess up.

The installation went smoothly. Almost too smooth lol. I took the puller bolt. Flipped the puller nut and used the factory washer. Added a spacer in there so I could grip the nut easier by hand. I was able spin the puller nut by hand installing the HB.
