Walbro FRB-5 guys

Let me see what I can come up with. I will have to get back to you tomorrow. Are you set on a Racor filter? I can get a Wix set up or Perma Cool that is 10 micron also and the replacement spin on filters for them are available at any auto parts. I think the Raycor will be harded to find??

Also, with my LP bypass fittings If you are runnig a different LP/filter it not a problem, just keep your stock LP for emergency. You would just remove my fittings and put the stock LP right back in the stock location, plug it in and go.

Well, taking stock pump and replacing my dead stock pump that transfers fuel from my rear tank into my main tank, ... I have to drop the rear tank and clean it too, replace that pump, then drop the front tank clean it and find out what is causing me out of fuel 11 gallons deep in my 22 gallon tank.

While I have the tank dropped, I am eliminating that damn sock altogether, and installing a prefilter.

Since I need to buy another LP anyhow, I might as well buy a walbro as they are same priced, and is rated to pull thru a filter, as well as better overall performance for the same price.

I do not have my heart set on any fuel filter at all, but I do want one with a clear bottom that separates water also.

I am interesrted in this very much leroy, but it may be a month or 2 before purchase as I need to get inspection sticker which may require exhaust, and WILL require tires. I already have 2 new tires, and think I found another 4 on c-list.

I appreciate your fast efforts leroy, but I don't want to mislead you that I am ready to buy right now. I can promise your efforts wont be wasted as I will do this in the next couple months, but can't right now.

Thanks again.

This is what I have so far, The Raycor is very expensive compaired to others although is has a nice priming function built into it.
My cost is over $200!! for the 460T. If you still want this let me know.

The good news is you can still go with a wix or Perma Cool filter set up for $65 thats the base and filter. (it's what I have been running)
The SS hose, LP to filter manager hose with all the fittings $50.
I am waiting on my Walbro dist to call me back. I wil post up a price when I know something.

I see that has no water bowl on the bottom, does it still separate water, or no? Do the raycor and wix have the same thread fittings?

BTW, your website's thumbnail pictures are HUGE in size!!!

I'm glad you picked up on that. The filter I quoted above is a 10 micron and NOT a water seperator. Wix 33109. The 33231 like TD uses is $50. just for the spin on and does have water sep capability.

I will down size the image I think its just the pics of the LP bypass fittings that are large.

$28 is what I paid at O Rileys for my last element, my racor I got on sale from a boat supplier, $99 IIRC gotomarine search the net you can find them, though nothing wrong with the others out there, I just wanted the Racor, also IIRC Ford had them on some trucks as factory equipment, you could find one in a boneyard possibly.

IMHO Racor is the best. They are the only ones that make a true water separator. Their media will rejct water. Racor is all you will see in marine use. I have not bought any complete Racor filters in awhile. But for the replacement R60 S, T or P we charge $26.25. As far as the 400 series goes I'm not sure you really need that one, especially if you use the lift pump to prime. I would have to check but I'm thinking the 660 runs around $135 but then again its been a couple of years since I bought any.

I thought that the price they gave me was high. The price I quoted was the same price that my Oriley's sells them for. TD could you confirm that is what you still pay for them.

My supplier just got back with about the 660 \Racor and they run $140 now, so I was close. That can be had with 2, 10 or 30 micron filter.

I'll back out of the discussion on pricing, when I posted price on the filt I had forgotten several vendors here carry or can get them; so in fairness to all of you I'll back out of that part of the discussion.

It's been almost 3 years since my last buying of a filter, so price may be up now, I always buy in pairs when I change them, 1 to put on, and another for a spare to use when the vac switch says I need to change it, (I carry spares as you never know when you come across a bad load of fuel).

I no longer change filters though just because they might be dirty due to miles or age, last one that was on there was on about 5 years, I changed it because the body was getting rusty, and I didn't want a filter blowing a seam.

OK this is what I have found. The guy at Orileiy's quoted me full blown retail. I don't buy from them, but do call sometimes to see what prices/parts are going for.TD was correct they can be had for $30ish now.

On the Walbro pumps I can do $95 on them.

So looking at a 'kit' running me $210 dollars, would get me,

Walbro FRB-5
SS Line from Walbro To Flt Manager pre-fitted (Pressure tested?)
All fittings and a small length of hose to connect Pre-filter to Walbro.
All fittings and small length of hose to connect pre-filter to FSU

Sounds perfect to me.

BTW, I can't be the only one whose LP - Flt Mgr line looks scary.

Considering Delco LP is 120 bux, for another 90 bux you get a Walbro and Pre-filter, and a pre-plumbed SS line from walbro to flt mgr.

That's great. Thank you very much for your time. It will be repaid.

Actualy $220 if you want the Wix 33231 with water sep or $210 with Wix 33109.
You still need the special fittings (LP bypass fittings) $20
So, $240 with 33231 or $230 w/33109 for everything you need.

As requested, here are some pics of how I installed the Walbro on my truck. There are more in my album.

After considering mounting both the Walbro & OEM pump in some type of parallel arrangement, I decided that for now, it would install much simpler/cleaner with just the Walbro. The IP should be able to pull fuel thru a failed Walbro to the same extent it can thru a failed OEM lift pump. My OEM type '93 pump is almost new, so I'll ziplock bag & keep it in the toolbox, so it could be swapped back in roadside if necessary.

I mounted the Walbro in the stock location. Modded the OEM plastic pump bracket so it's still there clipping the fuel return hardline & holding plastic wiring conduit. Used the stock bottom hole & had to drill 1 additional hole for the other Walbro mounting ear.

Some strips cut from old fenderwell splash shield sandwich the modded original plastic pump mount to provide some isolation/vibration damping btwn pump & frame.

It definitely eliminated any fuel pressure/volume deficit during the IP's highest fueling - holds steadily at 5-6 psi. With a new '93 OEM style pump, I had a very intermittent fishbite that was highly correlated to when IP fueling demand drew fuel pressure at the IP inlet down to a min of 1-2 psi.

Thusfar I haven't noted a single fishbite since installing the Walbro. When I installed my mechanical fuel pressure gauge concurrent to installing/starting the new engine, I had expected the fuel pressure gauge might dance a bit showing the solenoid/diaphragm pump type's pulses. I've had to add some type of pulse damper in the fuel line on a past project to attenuate these pulses & stabilize the gauge reading.

But with the OEM type pump, the only hint of pulsing showed at initial pump powerup, before the engine's cranked/started.

With the Walbro at idle, the added pressure/volume from each pulse shows on my mechanical fuel pressure gauge a bit like water hammer. Each solenoid pulse results in a big gauge bounce. When fueling rates climb above 40-50 mm3, so the IP is moving more fuel, the fuel pressure reading stabilizes considerably running around 5-6 psi.

Not certain if the pulsing the gauge shows causes any mechanical problem for the IP? In steadystate cruise at ~65 mph, the gauge is bouncing several psi up/down. & I think there might be a subtle, rhythmic change in engine tone/noise in synch with the lp pressure pulses.

What do you guys think? Have any of you running the Walbro seen this pulsing when fuel demand is low?

I'd think I could find some type of accumulator/damper to attenuate the pulsing the gauge reads. My first question/concern would be any negative mechanical impact on the IP.

Walbro install pics

Didn't get the pics to come thru on the first try.
