Walbro FRB-5 guys

I've been told repeatedly that this won't work, mounting a Walbro on it's side. It's still working.

I was getting ready to install mine and wondered about this. I e-mailed Walbro and this is the response

Yes, the FR series fuel pumps can be mounted in either the horizontal or
vertical position

I was looking at it and it looked like it would bolt into the stock location if it was horizontal. Was hoping to be lazy and avoid drilling holes.

The instructions did not specify that it could not be used horizontally, so I thought I'd get the answer directly from the horses mouth.
 
You'll bee to drill no matter what I think... I only tested mine with it... it worked AWESOME!! I havn't seen Turbine Doc comment on this thread, but I was talking on the phone with him last week and he verified that it outperforms the Heath Unit hands down with his truck (he has a fuel pressure gauge)... maintains 4 PSI @ WOT on this truck with Feed the Beast, HP4, and ATT
 
Someone should do a writeup on how to replace stock unit with Walpro unit. This sounds good especially with a pre-LP inline filter that supposedly the stock LP's can't pull well through?
 
LOL, yeah it freaked me out when I turned mine on the first time!!):h But since then it makes a very reasurring sound when I trun the key and lets me know its easily pumping fuel.:thumbsup: should have tanke pis of it to. Might next chance I get. I mounted it on the back side of the tranny crossmember for ease of access with the drill and plumbed it into the stock lines.

Could we get a picture of your setup please?

I need a new rear xfer pump, so gonna Walbro my main vein, and put my Delco in the rear.

My Racor is the 490R - P30. Think the 490R is the filter head/bowl designation. My current filter element is R90P. Racor's filter designations appear to be 30, 60, 90, 120 etc., for flow rating. Then P=30 micron, T=10 micron, & S=2 micron.
 
the 4 is the head style, 90 is the gph, and micron rating as stated, I run a 460T as a prefilter on mine, with the built in filter priming pump for filling after a filter change. a 45 gph head is sufficent but has higher flow restriction than my 60gph, the bowl/filter on the 90 gph was slightly longer than the real estate mine mounting location would allow for.
 
Seeing that you've had good luck w/ the 10 micron pre-lift pump, I ordered a 90T filter element along with the Walbro FRB-5. As long as it doesn't load up too quickly, I like the idea of the finer 10 micron primary filter. Your results with the 60 gph 10 micron before the Walbro show that the Walbro maintains more than adequate pressure & flow.

Figure I'll keep 1 each, spare OEM fuel filter & Racor elements in the truck. Just got my Kennedy chip & the Walbro should be here soon.

TD - Did you plumb both thw Walbro & OEM style lift pumps in parallel for the capability of both pumps, or so one is there as a backup? Maybe for both benefits?

I haven't looked closely at the Walbro pics yet. Hearing the comments about it being loud enough to hear when driving, I might mount it on some type of rubber grommets or isolators. Everytime I part a vehicle or piece of farm machinery, I collect the isolators - like the rubber mounts on our truck's ABS- for just such an occasion.
 
Both plumbed in parallel, but wired independently with cut out switch/relay to each so I only run on the walbro, have not needed to run both yet but could if I wanted to, more of a backup if the walbro dies the Heath h/o will get me home. I do not hear the walbro in my cab when driving only at idle when standing outside the truck do I hear it some

My Walbro makes less noise than the OEM pump. When priming the fuel system it was extremely noisy but once it was flowing fuel instead of air it was quiet.

Ditto here, the thing like to scared me to death the first time I primed the system:eek:, but after it pumped fuel it was fine and I can only hear it when I wait to start it.
 
We use these Walbro pumps all the time in another project. I really recommend priming them with a vacuum pump first. They are suppose to be able to run dry for 4 hours. However I can tell you the won't. We have found that priming them first cuts way down on future failures.
