Tune, resistors and tcc

I've got a used engine or a parts truck on my wish list. hopfully it and my current engine will last that long until I find one had have the funds to get it!! :)

heck, if I find one with 4x4, my truck might turn into a parts truck lol
4X4 costs more at the pump. Just sayin. 🤷‍♂️😹😹😹
I do like Mine though. The wifey thinks it is too big for Her for in town, until there is a foot or two of snow to contend with. 😹😹😹

I've wanted to convert mine to 4x4. But bigger thing to me is I seriously want to put a 5 speed manual transmission in it. Just haven't had luck finding a Donor truck when I have funds. With all the towing I do I hate have an automatic. Probably not going to do any towing with it for awhile though cause I want to get to really trust this tranny before I push my luck with it..

Thats a good plan. Be sure it will hold up before pushing it.
Hoping and praying it does. Sounds like You need a break.

maybe we can work together on finding a donor truck lol one of us find something 4x4 manual with a good engine when we both have the extra funds!!

although not sure what costs would be involved to ether get an engine down here or a whole truck up to you but there's always possibilities :) I still to this day keep kicking myself in the rear because I had the opportunity back when I bought mine. the same person I got mine from had one with a manual and 4x4 he wanted to sell me for $300. I turned it down because I didn't have a place to store it :(

if we get lucky finding one down south somewhere with a clear title, chances are the frame and body will be in good shape with less salty roads, heck you might even want to stick it on the road if we find one in decent shape!

BTW. For any one that wants to flush out there tranny lines and cooler...I had to redneck it because I don't own some of the neat gagets others do. So I figured out a way to do it that gives enough pressure to force fluid through the lines and cooler and back...
I took a pump up garden sprayer that has the hand wand on it like you use for spraying weeds..
Washed it out really good and sprayed it out with brake cleaner to get it good and dry. ( If you get a brand new one that's not nesacery).
I removed the adjustment tip on the wand tip.
Cut off the little diverter tip that's on the end under the adjuster tip..
Discard the tip I cut off and the adjuster tip.
Put a piece of rubber fuel hose on the tip of the wand and other end of the rubber hose on to one of the tranny lines...
Put a couple quarts of ATF In the sprayer tank and pump it up really good so it has alot of pressure in the tank...
Put another piece of rubber hose on the other tranny line and put other end in a empty 2 liter soda bottle.
Put hose clamps on the hoses where they go on the tranny lines and the wand.
The sprayer wand has a trigger handle on it so contral how much pressure you put through the lines.
This allows you to be under the truck and watching the fluid that's coming out into the 2 liter bottle so you know when it's coming out clean..
Just a hack for anyone that wants to do the clean out without spending a ton.

Honestly not much.. mostly just dark mucky stuff...t think whatever disintegrated in the tranny went straight in to the pan cause I didn't see any metallic specs or shavings when I flushed it. It was all in the pan...not sure if there's a way the stuff could only fall down to the pan and not go into the lines or cooler... But I messed with it for about 2 hours before I figured out how to do it with the sprayer .

Another thing .it must take awhile for the tranny to get all the air out of it because I had to add fluid twice last night, and again today...when I add fluid it shifts quicker and doesn't hesitate at take off. F.w.i.w. those things hold ALOT of fluid..I'll bet I got 11-12 quarts in there by now

next time I do a filter and fluid change, I might look into one of those pans with the cooling fins. think they have the drain plug that has the magnet on the end rather than the donut magnet in the pan. those things get nasty with all the metal on them that turns to what looks like magnetic grease n gunk

I wouldn’t, The price isn’t worth it. Better off spending less cash and getting better external cooler. If you want the magnet on plug you can install that, but you still want that big donut magnet inside.

Good work @Stoney! Glad the new tranny is working well for ya

On the subject of transmissions, I've never driven a 4L80E, but can say from years of experience with my NV4500 that sometimes when towing the huge drop in RPMs/ gap in gear ratios can be a bit of a pain especially when towing heavy. Granted I tow 10k behind me somewhat regularly and have got used to puttering up steep grades in 3rd gear going 35 in a 55. May be a little better for you having 4.10 gears, and no trying to discourage you at all. Just wanted to share that the 5 speed is a good transmission but in no ways perfect.

Really close to you in Elmira is a Pick a Part yard where you may be able to find a used one. If really serious about going manual save up and get a new one, you can even get new rebuilt with cryogenic internals. I decided to go that route because it was pretty much the same price to buy a new one vs buying all new internals and rebuilding myself. Paying a shop to rebuild would have cost more than a new transmission. However grabbing a used trans from a wrecker yard for cheap will save you from having to pay $500-$1000+ for a core charge. Plus any used tranny will most likely have been run with the incorrect oil and will therefore need a rebuild sooner than later anyways. As the saying goes you can't fix stoopid, but duct tape can muffle the sound 😆

For the new exhaust bolts/ clamps you have, I'm a bit confused as the manifolds are threaded and I see bolts included in the set you got. If the bolts thread in just fine, don't worry about the nuts. Just remember to coat with antiseize liberally. As mentioned earlier I like using studs and nuts instead of bolts, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do to keep movin'

I also am pretty sure the ID of the exhaust manifolds is 1-3/4", but the larger gaskets may work. Are you replacing with a stock or larger 2.25" or 2.5" diameter pipe?

@DieselAmateur Are the manifold to crossover really 1-3/4” ? I always thought it would be larger since the crossover pipe is 2+ inches. Man if that’s the case. I wonder if someone makes aftermarket manifolds with larger crossover ports. I would think that is a huge restriction where our 6.5’s could benefit with better flow

Ive never had mine off to actually see!
