The "restification" of a 98 6.5 TD...

To be fair I don't think they were taking the old system into account.

ITA, Leo. I guess it's all perspective; in my mis-spent youth, I worked in a muffler shop for a summer, and I NEVER take off exhaust without a hot wrench. Under 2 minutes and it's all on the ground except the band clamp at the turbo. Sounds like it's a good setup as usual, BJ!

Waiting for pics and maybe a little audio/YouTube so we can hear the monster grumble...

As requested.

Hey everybody, what's better than pictures?

Sound bites!

Inside:

Outside:

After I get a couple heat cycles I can re-apply the paint to the few areas where it's expanding and settling.

I also think I've got a very light "rub" somewhere but I can't spot it yet. I think it might be the flanges at the ball joint. It's angled up and I think it might be tapping the heat shield under load.

Egt's are hard to tell, but it does seem a little better on a very steep long hill I use down the road. Tripping into 1100+ used to very easy and I'd have to let off lest it go screaming past. Today, I could hit 1050+ but it took some effort. And it seemed it was accelerating better at lower temps. All subject to fault as it was by my calibrated "butt dyno"...

Oh yeah, one other thing: this sucker is L.O.U.D. when you get on the throttle! Drone int he cabe on accell is about a half step below uncomfortable and outside is like a mid-evil battle cry to arms!

Gratefully, it quiets down as soon as you start a cruise "steady state" or lighten up on the throttle....

I rattled one poor schmuck in a Pontiac solstice today. We were at the bottom of the hill and he was coming up my outside just as we were starting the climb. He had the unfortunate luck of being level with the pipe just as I hit it (I didn't plan it that way).

I think I blew his toupee off! What an expression on his middle aged crisis face.....you'd think I had just grabbed his wife by the "tuckus" at a dinner party!

Priceless.....

At least there was only a minimal "diesel puff" and not a rolling black cloud. My truck is tuned to clean up right away when punched.

Just for fun, here's my old 350 TBI with a 3 inch from the mandrel Y-pipe, cherry bomb elite muff, and a high flow cat:

What a great old truck that was! I was actually a little sad when I finally admitted to myself it had rotted out from underneath me and was past saving.....:(

Leroy, I'll see what I can find.

Cheers

Leroy, hope this link works:

http://www.diamondeyeperformance.com/product_info.php?products_id=261

That's 4 inch.

They offer a 5 inch, but I don't know if that is 5 inch in or 5 inch out. Obviously, I'd be looking for a 4 inch in, 5 out if they have it.

USPS shipping please....

;)

I'll check on that for you. Might be tomorrow. Looks like a Dmax tip and might be more pricey?? The vents I believe are to help cool outlet temps. Don't think the 6.5 needs it?? My tip looks very nice and is a 4"to5" tip. I am headed back out in a few to finish up my install I will get a bunch more pics and post them in my DE thread and my Burban project thread. http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/showthread.php?29321-94-Suburban-Build-thread

BTW I love the way yours sounds from the interior. I hope its a quite as is seemed on the video. All my other 4"ers have been very tolerable.

Ready for sticker shock? that tip would cost $80 Plus shipping. I can get the same tip. BUT its not vented. Its the same as I and Barry are using for $40 + shipping. I'll get a link for you next.

Not exactly my usual "aircraft quality" work, but it's pretty much done and will work fine for under the bed of my truck:

Next up is to hang it, make a custom fill tube (already underway!) and finish up the wiring.

Then it's good to go!

:)

Just and engine idle movie. Plus; high idle, blow-by examination and raptor lift pump pressure.

Dipstick will "puff" with the oil cap on. "Water test" pushes the water down about 1/16-1/8 inch at idle, pulls it up about 4-5 inches at 2000 rpm (I'm thinking the CDR is toast). No pressure or bubbles in the coolant tank.

Oil pressure is usually between 34-40 psi.

Sound healthy enough to haul a 35 foot 8000lb trailer across the continent?

:)

CDR is probably fine. Might try cleaning it. I couldn't find anything in my shop that would harm the diaphram. I have more blowby on mine. I have about the same amount of miles on mine. I'd probably be more concerned about the tranny unless it's been rebuilt recently.

Well, I'm at it again.

I'm thinking about dropping another grand on the old girl:

Heath diesel T-series PCM, Turbo master, shorter belt, and a fluidampr.

I'll get it right from Bill's hot little hands when I pass though Ellensberg in July.

This is just never gonna end....:banghead:

At least I'll be well set up for an Optimizer of P400 in the future.....:rolleyes5:

What? You? A turbomaster????

:hihi:

Yup, I'm time critical here. If I wasn't I'd just spool up a flash myself and get 'er done. I just don't have the time for a full on test and tune thrash.

Bill's tune is set up for a TM and that's what he knows/recommends, so that's the way I'm going.......for now. The stock setup will stay on the truck/in the box for later development. Or, if I find the TM is as good as some report, I may just stay with it.......time will tell.

wouldn't a hot PCM stress an already worn motor? I would vote yes on the fluidamper though.

I have the same concerns, I'm calling Bill Tuesday and we're going to sort it out. I'm just looking for better towing on the hills and lower egt's, not balls out performance.

Also, a bump in MPG is worth it when you're going 7000kms.

The torque lock function will be good for down hills and lower trans temps when climbing. I can manipulate that in a reflash also, but once again, I just don't have time to dial it in correctly. Waaaay too much else on the go right now so I'm just going to have to pay someone else with the knowledge to do it correctly for towing performance (IE: Bill)

The fluidampr is more for my "peace of mind".

My stock damper is in good shape, but the thought of it chucking a chunk of rubber and us sitting on the side of the road with a shattered crank and block does very little for my confidence level.

Another 400 bucks for peace or mind is worth it.

Plus, I'll be well set up for a new engine when it comes time.....hopefully later, not sooner.

;)
