The "restification" of a 98 6.5 TD...

Well, after a couple months of work, the water tank is done and installed. I've been working on the brackets the last 2 days, but it was worth the effort. It fits in the bed side forward of the wheel well perfectly!

I was worried a bit about strength of the brackets, 6 gallons of water isn't exactly light. But I grabbed ahold of the tank after it was in and did a couple "pull ups". If it can support my.....ahem....."weight".....it can support 6 gallons.

No sense taking picks, its all pretty concealed and tight in there...

Filled the tank today and hammered her down a couple gravel roads, washboards and some big "woops".

Tank is solidly mounted, holding 6+ gallons and didn't move a bit.

Happy pappy here!

:)

Only thing is the silicone on the tank cover weeps a bit at full level. No big, I'm not yanking the whole smozzle apart again just for that.

Next, just the wiring and I'm cooking with gas......errrr......water.

Just got off the phone with Joe at heath diesel.

I settled on a tow tune pcm with engine braking management, turbo master to go with it, a shorter belt and a fluidampr.

1080 bucks!

Not quite the experience I'd thought it would be though.

The guy was nice, polite, knowledgeable and all that jazz, but it felt like was trying to upsell me to a cold air intake, injectors, duramax fan, fan clutch and a new water pump.

I could be completely wrong, but it kinda felt like it.

He's going to call me back/email me tomorrow with details.

He mentioned that there would probably be a charge for them to install the stuff. If shipping comes out to less, I'll probably just get them to send it out.

If there's enough time to get it here that is.....

When does your fan clutch engage now? If you don't hear it, then changing it at the same time probably wouldn't hurt. Everything is out of the way, anyway, if you're changing the balancer.

Why are you changing the balancer, anyway? Is yours cracked? If not, then you can probably wait on that... pulling a trailer won't make it go boom.

Ask to speak to Bill tomorrow, and tell him you're from here. I'm sure Joe is a nice guy, but I've never dealt with him.. a whole bunch of us have dealt with Bill.

My clutch is good to go. I can hear that sucker roar when it kicks in.

I can't get my ECT over 180 anyways. I've hammered the heck out of the old girl unloaded and towing my 35'er and it just refuses to climb past 180. I think someone must have slipped a couple 180 t-stats into it in the past.

Joe is said he is going to talk to Bill tomorrow. Bill shot me an email before the long weekend saying he'd be out till tuesday. Form what Joe was saying, it sounds like he's not going to be back until tomorrow (or he was out this afternoon) and he's going to talk to him about my order.

Joe is going to call me back tomorrow or shoot me an email.

Joe also said he wasn't sure if they installed the stuff or not and there would be a charge if they did. All I need is either a hand or the tools to change the balancer myself. If they're going to charge me for labor, I'll just pay shipping to here and get to use the parts the whoel way instead of just after ellensberg.

I'm changing the fluidampr simply because I had planned to do it in the future anyways. I figured I might as well change it now and gain whatever benefits from it I can on the drive cross continent....

Ah, thanks, BJ... sorry to be so nosey. Just had a bunch of questions sneak up on me all at once :D

Well, just got off the phone with Heath. The shopping list:

PCM
Turbo master
shorter belt
Fluiddampr.

That was one heck of a punch in the pocketbook...........:svengo:

I'm thining it'll be worth it, but will be pretty disappointed if it doesn't.

I must say, after two hours on the phone with Bill i did learn a thing or two.......seems pretty knowledgeable/experienced.

I can't say everything we talked about, a few things he told me I got the impression he didn't want in general circulation.

But it's pretty fair to say he's got more than a few fingers in a few pies!

Mmmmmmm.....Pie.....nnnnnggaaahhhhhhhh.......

;)

Hmm... ya think? LOL

Say hi to Bill for me.

Yup, he told me a few things about his involvement with the engine design since the early years and he had some impressive claims.

Also that his LSR truck might not be the highest HP IDI diesel he's ever built......;)

He tossed out a couple number that were....well.......QUITE impressive.

Nummber I never would have thought an IDI to be capable of supporting due to the nature of the comet chambers......

Well, picked up transmission master solenoid kit today:

http://www.electricaladvantage.net/4l80esolenoidmasterkitwinternalharness.aspx

Thing is, now I can't decide if I'm going to throw it n the spares box or just put it in the trans.

I do have to drop the pan and do a fluid/filter change before I go.

The trans has 414000 kms ( as far as I know), but it's running top notch.

Except for the o ring on the case elect plug weeping....

Actually, now that I think of it, Bill is tweaking the trans parameters in my new PCM. It might be worth changing out the parts in the kit "just in case"...

I also think I've reached PNR with the 6.5;

I've got so much money into it, I'm committed. It won't be getting an lb7 like I eventually wanted.

It's an optimizer or (preferably) a p400 when the 599 finally gives up the ghost.

Aaaawwww SHi............

Just fried my 3 bar progressive controller.

Devils own just got themselves andother 150 bucks becuase I pulled a rookie move and let the smoke out of a circuit chip. Went to power up the system with my bench power and had it on 75 amps (previous project) instead of 2.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr.......very PO'd at myself right now.......

:mad5:

What a boner rookie move to not check everything before flipping the switch......:banghead:

Sorry to hear that, BJ ... you know what they say:

Wisdom comes from experience. Experience is what you get just shortly after you needed wisdom.

Wouldn't be the first rookie move I've pulled, either, with nobody else handy to blame.

Well, I've never been a fan of oil additives but I may have to eat a little crow soon.

Paveltoz mentioned he used restore in his truck with good results in reducing blowby. I may have dismissed his comment too soon.

I'm generally not a fan of the stuff or any "mechanic in a can" product.

I once put restore in a Bronco II with the 2.9 and I drained it out the next morning. The little bugger got so loud and clattery, I thought a lifter was going to fly out the valve cover.

But half on a larf, and since I was going to be changing oil in a week and dumping it out early wouldn't make a difference, I dropped a can of Restore into the oil filler.

Well, here I am about 5 days later and I'll be damned if the oil blowby isn't less and the oil pressure has come up a couple psi. I'll be double damned if it doesn't seem to run a bit smoother/quieter too.

I'm going to run it another week (not really due for change yet anyways) and see what happens.

Like I said, I generally regard "mechanic in a can" as snake oil and a waste of time and I still do for the vast majority of products out there; but this stuff just might live up to some of it's claims.

Now I wish I'd taken some compression readings before putting it in. Any observations I do make now will end up being purely subjective.

But I will say this; if this trend continues, I'll be chucking a can of it in the ol' girl before I head out cross country....

Sitka Alaska is nice this time of year gents!

I'm sitting on the ramp outside the coast guard hanger, 12 degrees, under a crescent moon, just a nice breeze too.

Topping that off, we successfully completed our mission and found a poor fellow from the States that hammered his bug smasher into a mountain and brought him back after "some" bandaging and taping...

This is a great job!

Life is good sometimes.

A quick nights rest and we load up to head home.

You want a rewarding job?
