The "restification" of a 98 6.5 TD...

I wonder if you could do WVO/BIO? Anything to cut the price of diesel!. Would be fairly simple. I to would not be after power adders, but MPG adders.
You might ask why not just run straight WVO then?. I don't know why you asking me!

No, but really I think it would be a comprimize between nothing and a full blown WVO kit. And, you would not tend to gum up the IP and injectors. Also pepole are always trying to "dry out" there WVO/BIO so there is no water in it. But if your just going to inject water anyway then it would be one les step in the WVO/BIO process.
I'm just thinking out loud and asking questions. What do you guys think?

You're off the reservation there my friend. Don't know what to tell ya on that. Not my area of expertise.

However, I highly doubt a water injection setup could deal with WVO.

I don't think I'd want to be injecting it into the intake anyways.

I would think that WVO has to be injected under pressure into the comb chamber or not at all.

To me, it just sounds like a bad idea all around.

Might be best to start a dedicated thread for those questions. You probably won't get much exposure here in my project thread.

Cheers

Am I going to run out and do it? no. Maybe if I had 50 engines laying around like Barry. I do think it could work though. The WMI system should be able to handle WVO you would just need to make sure WVO was hot and atomized finely.
The WMI just got my brain to ticking is all.
OK I'm done I'll take my ball and go home.

Hey brother, I'm not trying to shut you down!

I just suggested a new thread to get a few of the WVO guys to comment on it. It's just not my specialty and not everyone sees the posts in my thread.

I just don't think it will work in a WMI setup. The pumps and nozzles are made to handle water, waaaay less viscous than WVO.

I can also see the WVO congealing in the intake tract and dropping out of suspension, then cooling and sticking everywhere. The diesel manifolds are "dry" manifolds. That means there's no betting how an atomized liquid will move through it. Carb manifolds are designed to be "wet" and would handle the mixture differently. But again, the diesel manifold is designed to only handle air and not deal with a fluid held in suspension with the air. I can picture pooling and gumming all over the place.

I knew you were not, but I don't want to get your thread all off topic. Thanks.

Pulled the cardboard form out of the finished water tank a few minutes ago.

Came out with a bit of a fight because of the internal shape, my hands and arms are scuffed and bleeding from various little nicks and cuts.

Quick run over with a palm sander and some 80 grit cleaned up the little bits of left over resin and exposed any weak areas at the seams.

Measured out the final volume (the ol' bucket method!), right between 30-33 liters (8-8.5 gallons).

A very decent size for towing!

Got a few pin hole leaks at a seam or two. No big and easily repaired by a simple reinforcing strip, which I had planned to do anyways. I have more fiberglassing to do anyways ( cap, fittings and tubing).

Once it's all done, I'll rock guard the whole tank. More for looks than protection. Fiberglass doesn't rust and there's going to be a "flap" between the tank and the wheel well.

Looks like I'm on schedule to mount it under the bed this weekend.

:)

Tank is coming along.

All glassed up:

Next up is to fab the cover....:)

I was out in the back yard, checking the water level sender for leaks when I heard the dog growling from the front of the house.

Walk around to the front and there's a huge purolator truck in the driveway.

WTH?

My exhaust can't be here already can it?

Sure enough:

Crack the box open and......

OH NOES!

It's gotta go back!

I ordered exhaust pipe, not sewer pipe!

Pictures just can not properly show how big this stuff looks on first opening the box. IT'S HUGE!

Now, the even better news...

Spent 342.00 cdn to get it ordered and shipped to my door.

Then, GST, brokerage and a bit of tax came out to 65 bucks on delivery.

That's great! Waaaaayy less than I expected to get rooked by UPS! I was expecting at least 150-200 bucks on delivery!

Finally, things are going the right way for a change!

you ordered exhaust with a MUFFLER?! Why would you do that?

Because I'm not 18 anymore, I'm an old fart......

;)

Besides, it's pretty much only a muffler in name only.

I've seen resonators with more baffling.

It's like and old glasspack, you can look right through it. A full 4 inches round through it.

Not so sure I'm going to like that much.......:Skep:

Gonna be a busy weekend.....

:)

I got mine yesterday. Very high quality so far. We will see how it is on the install. I took almost the same picutres to post in my Burb build thread.

Well, the exhaust is on.

Final impression?

I'll call it a good kit, but not a great one.

Why?

Well, here's the reasons why;

It's advertised as needing nothing but hand tools. It's anything but...

You need a sawsall or a smoke wrench to get the old system off. There is no other way that will work with old pipes that won't have you wishing someone would just put a gun in your mouth and pull the trigger...

You need a cut off saw to make the intermediate pipe the proper length, it comes as a universal 48" piece. I suppose you could cut it with a hack saw or sawsall, but you just don't get the proper square cut.

Almost all the hanger brackets are there, except the intermediate pipe hanger.

There is one in the kit, but it does not fit the truck. At least, it doesn't fit my 98. I had to cut the original bracket off the old pipes and weld it to one of the 4" pipe clamps.

Cut off saw, angle grinder, MIG.....not exactly common hand tools like the kit advertises.

The pipes needed dressing with a file, lots of burrs that prevented the pipes from sliding together.

The pipes/muffler required reshaping with a ball peen hammer in the openings in order to fit together.

And finally, the pipes were covered in forming and release agent. Nornmally not such a big deal, pipes usually are. But Diamond Eye specifically advertises that thier pipes are washed before shipping and can be handled right out of the box.

Now, the good stuff:

You literally are stuffing 4.5 pounds of sh*t into a 5 pound bag. It goes in, but it's pretty close in a lot of places. To Diamond Eye's credit, it fit just right in each and every spot. I either got very lucky, or they did thier home work when the designed it.

It all lined up very well, once it was all in place and "massaged".

The muffler is stainless, a nice touch. It's a glass pack, so make your own decision on whether or not that is a good thing.

The kit is really complete, from turbo to tail pipe (except for that one wrong bracket).

Now, the sound:

First start it was evident that there was a glass pack on the truck.

Instant drone noise.

I haven't driven it yet, only idle in the driveway. I'm hoping it's not going to be as loud as I think it is.

This is a daily driver and a trailer towing family rig, not a kids truck.

In my opinion, Loud pipes don't save lives, they just piss off the neighbours and lead to early hearing loss. Personal preference there....

One thing I did do before the kit went in was to wipe it all down nice and clean with thinner, then spray everything with satin black barbcue paint (good to 1200). From tubro to tailpipe, all satin black.

And it looks damned good!

I gave it a nice coat of paint in order to help stave of fthe rusties a little longer.

Did I mention it looks damned good all black?

Overall, for the price it's a good kit.

It took me around 8 hours to remove the old system, paint the new one, make the modifications needed, then get it all hung and properly aligned.

The ride right bags were also great. I pumped them up to 80 PSI and it gave me plenty of room under the truck to cut/manuver pipes and pull them out.

Keep in mind, I not a new wrench at this and have all the tools readily at hand I could possibly need.

You may take longer (or less) depending on you own ability....

:)

Glad you got it all together, I'll be doing some upgrades on the 99 after the moving and all that is said and done.

Just one thing...

Hey there, you watch it old man. Next thing you know you'll be yelling at kids shaking your cane in the air. I actually had to say something to the neighbor kids cause they were running between the trucks today, at 25 I already feel like a crotchety old man.

Truth betold, loud pipes only save lives on motorcycles really, and that still isn't that true. My 88 is obnoxiously loud, dual 2.5" 40-series flowmater. The 99 is substantially quieter even with no muffler.

turbochargers: natures muffler!

great white, how long will the water tank last distance wise? cany you tank up fuel and water and be able to make it to the next stop before more water is needed? (especially under load) fine glasswork btw. between you and david, you make my work ethic seem non-existant! :)

Don't know yet, it's not functional yet. Depends on how hard into the throttle you are I would guess....

I know I've read some guys say they can drain a 5 gallon tank on a good long grade.

All depenmds on how you have it set up and what you're doing.

I'll be installing mine today. Thats sucks they did'int wash your system. Mine is very clean. it was the first thing I checked.
As far as tools needed go's, ya they should say to use a sawzall to remove old system. The rest of what you discribed is common for an exhaust install.
A trick I use to get staight cuts with a sawzall on the new pipe is to use a hose clamp at the line to be cut then work my way around the pipe using the clamp as a guide.
I don't like loud systems either, so I hope is not unbaerable. My last three 4" systems were fine as far as sound/noise. I was willing to have alittle more sound for the trade in MPGs for one.
And as always: got any pictures?

I'll snap a couple of the installed system today.

Thing is, I know those little "bumps" are common for installing exhaust. For me to work around them was fairly easy, I have the skills and the tools. I also alloted teh entire day to the job, since it was being done in the driveway on my back ;), from previous experience. Someone who reads the add hype and thinks they can install the kit with a socket set in an afternoon is in for a nasty surprise once they get into it. Especially with cutting the bracket off the old pipe and welding it to a new clamp....

That's a good idea with the hose clamp as a cut guide!

I'd still rather a chop saw though.

But Ya gotta work with what ya got!

I still think it's a good kit, just not a great one.

Fix the few little PITA (the hanger is the biggest one) and it would be a great kit.

However, it is great VALUE for the money. I couldn't even get a 3 inch system made around these parts for the amount I spent on the whole system. Lowest quote I got was around 500 bucks, with an aluminized muffler. I'm into the Diamond eye sytem for about 420 bucks right now...

Now I'm looking for a stainless tip.

Can you order just a tip or is that something that needs to be ordered at the time of purchase?

I'm liking the Diamond eye vented tips....

Price maybe?

;)
