Road Trip !!

C'mon, Leo ... you ever see a bald bear? :D There's lots of grey... must have been the poor lighting, covered it up! Too bad you couldn't make it out to visit, too; calving season is a beotch unless you raise crazy buffaloes that won't let you close, anyway.

AK, where are ya at now? We need PICS, man!

Paveltolz was going to be the official photographer of the Paul/Jake/Les/Forrest GTG...

Us old bears are not patient people... :D

Paul and Les stopped by my place yesterday and we all spent some time working on my 506. It was great hanging out with them.

I didn't get many photos, but here's one of all three of us right before they left. Good luck on the rest of the trip, Les.

Well I rolled into Cedar City at noon. We'll spend the rest of the day here at my inlaws and then head out to Vegas in the morning, I should be home Tues/Wed and will post my pics then.

Les takes the term "Mobile mechanic" and how far to travel to wrench on a 6.5 to the extreme doesn't he.:D

In the pic, besides Les...who is who?

Sorry, got a little involved with a couple things when I got back to the house and spent today catching up on some things as well. Give me a few minutes to reduce the photo's down to postable size and I'll put them up. Geeeezz, Apparently the phrase, "The earth is slow but the ox is patient" doesn't translate to "The Bear" under the furry top now does it.

Don't let it bother you Paul, bears tend to be grouchy when they come out of hibernation, and we had a long winter.:D

Nice!
Hey when all you guys get done and all the pics (Les included) downloaded to your computers, select some of the better 'can signing specific' ones and post them in the Travelling can thread too http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/showthread.php?5411-Traveling-Oil-Can/page33 so it's in the running record. Sure glad you all had the time to GTG and prove, once again, what a great forum we have built here...

Who has the can now? I'd like to see that head out to the guys from Washington area. David, Devin, Mike and...?

Saturday, 30 APR 11, Salt Lake City UT

Lets try this again, pictures posted pretty wonky.

Les called Friday night to set up our meet yesterday. After a few phone call and text exchanges we agreed to meet for breakfast and head over to Jake’s to help turn some wrenches on his Ted’s 506. Giving credit where credit was due, when I was talking to Les Friday night about the GTG plan it was his suggestion that instead of linking up at his uncle’s place it would be a better plan to go to Jake’s for wrench turning.
I told Les that was usually awake at 5am regardless of the day so call whenever he was ready to have me head to link up. I was up late and while I woke up at 5am to answer Nature’s screaming, I did go back to sleep. Les, who took me up on the ‘call anytime’ invite rang me about 0630. I saw his caller ID and said to self before answering the phone, “Sound awake, sound like you’re awake.”

So I headed over to his uncle’s place which was out of power because a transformer blew during the storm that morning that dropped 10” of snow on their place. I got a scant ½”…some guys have all the luck.

We stood around and got acquainted, showed him what all I’d done on the truck and was absolutely amazed at his ability to recall data, posts, threads, names etc as we talked. Often he’d say, “show me what you did when you were talking about (fill in the blank) on this or that that thread.” Loaded up a couple of the younger relatives with sled and small excited dog to take up the hill to the local school so they could get one last day, everyone hopes, of sledding. Afterwards we went to breakfast and talked a lot more. Turns out we’ve walked similar paths in Iowa as missionaries for our church, albeit a few years apart. I know, I look younger but I’m actually a little older than Les.

We then headed over to Jake’s to continue the GTG and help him a bit with his piston swap. Jake signed the oil can and I took a lot of shots of it but will post most of those along with detailed shots of signatures on ‘the can’ thread.

We did a lot more talking than wrenching but that’s the real point of a get together right.

Simon, Les really enjoyed your time together and I must say I wish I was able to be there for it. Then again, you’d have had more mouths to feed and I’m not intuitive when it comes to wrench turning as Les is. He can testify as to how inept I am as it seemed they were explaining a lot of stuff to me I should have already known.

Les, thanks for the time, it was a privilege and an honor to get to know you. Safe sojourn brother and I hope to get up there for the house warming.

I have "The Can" now. Maggie gets back tomorrow night and either she or I will do some more detailed shots. I'll send them to you on CD so you can have them in full resolution if you want.
If Dave, Darin, Mike or ??? from Washington will PM me an address I'll get it launched their way later this week.

No need for the CD Paul. Just so we have a record in the can thread. I'll PM those guys to look in this thread. I'm pretty sure they are already subscribed though.

You still coming out our way for a wedding this summer?

So my brother inlaw took my over to the scales at the local IFA where he works. CGVW was 14700. It felt like it was heavier than that. Last time I was heavily loaded up the Alcan I weighed 16500. That was in my 70 Chev 1/2 ton 4x4 with a 383 and a 4 speed. I got 9-10 mpg no matter what. I guess I expected more from the Cummins but we got around 13.5 mpg up to Simons. And after we left Simons we had wind and were traveling faster (better roads), and got about 11 mpg. I was telling Jim I was suprised at how fast it heated up and truth be told the longer I drove it and got used to it, it ran a little cooler than before. I guess there is a learning curve when driving a new to you truck.
