Replacement Air Filter Options

I am still running the factory flat air filter and box in my 95. Went to buy a filter the other day and the WIX filter was $30. I thought at that point that I would explore my options like going with some kind of after market filter and get rid of that big box and flat filter. I wanted to see what all of you guys did as a replacement or if you are still running factory setups.

My 93 is getting the 97 k47 air box-cleaner set-up. It's the best factory offering. I put one of those on my 95 2500LD also. Can hear slight turbo whistle now.

put an afe CAI on mine. has dry filter, blow it out 2/3 time then wash it. also the CAI really lets the turbo whine out-of course it cost just over 200, but has been worth it.

I have a K47 factory unit on the Tahoe. Made a lot of difference, especially with the 'hogged out' intake and new downpipe and crossover and free-flowing cat.

These engines really need good airflow to get the most out of them.

Although a lot of guys love their K&Ns, I have removed mine and am running a stock Delco filter. I used to run the HD Delco filter, but noticed a lot of black smoke when accelerating. With the standard, I don't get that.

I went K47 upgrade as well, with AFE dry filter inside. I almost never drive in dusty conditions. It cost a bunch, and I did it during a bunch of other mods, so I really don't know how much it helped or hurt. I sure can hear my turbo however.

As most everyone else has said.....i am also running the stock K47 round style box on mine. I bought it from an auto salvage yard shiped for about $65. I am running a stock ACDelco filter as i couldnt decide on an aftermarket dry filter. Hard to hear any turbo whine, but i have peace of mind that I am flowing clean air. No doubt that it flows better than the stock flat box.

The other quick mod I did when adding the newer filter setup, was to use a piece of 3in black sewage pipe to replace the restrictive factory elbo into the box.

Is the K47 used on gassers or do I need to find one off of a diesel if I start checking with junkyards? Also what year did they switch to this setup so i can tell the junkyard what year it needs to come off of?

K47 on mine but it sounds like you guys got better deals on your's. I, like Matt and High Sierra, put a different elbow on the box. My elbow was from intakehoses.com.

Uni-Filter makes an oiled foam filter for the flat panel and the round model. They flow excellent and most importantly filter much better than a thin oiled cotton filter. I believe pretty much all dirt bikes have an oiled foam filter as standard equipment which proves to me their ability to filter.
Consider this option!

I have a gasser 1997 and it has the round style airbox on it. Only difference I can tell is on a gasser, the outlet is toward the firewall. How can this box be modified to exit toward the front?

I have one of those also off a 97k2500 w/7.4. I figured I could make a plug for the hole on the firewall side and cut a new one on the radiator side with a holesaw. The cut out piece could maybe be used as the plug with a little help. You could always Red Green the hole with black duct tape:thumbsup::D:eek:

Just pulled mine out to check fit. The box is much larger than the diesel box. It will hit the turbo. Easier to build a whole new box from scratch than to try to mod the 7.4 box.

The round style started in 97' and IMO you would be much better off just buying the correct one for the diesel and save yourself the hassle.

I called around every area junkyard in CT and no one even had a 6.5, let alone a 97+. Found this site online, which is where i got mine from. Has a complete listing of junkyards around the country and checks their inventories for the part. I did a quick search under airbox/air cleaner and came up with a list of boxes and prices, anywhere from $55 to $200.

surely it doesn't matter if the replacement came off of a 1500, 2500, or a 3500 series does it?
