Chrome on Black.

Concur, Chrome on Black
I shot a few cars in High School, long ago. Make sure you fade the edges of the primer out as much as possible, wet sand, flat palm across surface to feel for any 'edges' or high spots.... Sorry if I'm preaching to the choir, but it is amazing what comes up from the base to manifest itself in the finish coat.

Lookin' good, very nice. What kind of door handles is that truck going to get?

Ive got the Kodiaks going back in the fronts. Regulars in rear.

Pretty good for your first time!

Thats what she said :smile5:

I'll be having so much fun wet sanding today. Anyone want to help? Ill only charge $.50 for 10 minutues of wet sanding.

:usa:

As a old professional painter told me"the paint only magnifies what's under it". Black magnifies more than any other color. White magnifies the least. Good luck.

Black will show every little thing. I think I better just paint it with white latex house paint with a textured roller:nono:

Not really, its coming along very nice.

Cant swing that, but Ill make you a special deal. If you come down I will let you help for free! Its so much fun, come on.
Actualy it is about as enjoyable as it can be. I have a shaded area, good music and a pool to jump into when I get hot. Im working from my good friends house. His house is a 100'x 50' metal building. Has a 3 bed 2 bath house built out inside it. Outside living area, but still inside the building is a full on paint shop with paint booth. My friend is a BASF paint rep and by far the best painter I know of. Im not bad myself, but he blows me away in skill/technique/speed afterall thats what he does for a living for last 25ish years.

Your friend is a BASF rep and the paint still cost $1000?
My friends are always telling me I should rent my house out and build a apartment in my shop):h
My point about the black is that the body work needs to be near perfect or it will stick out like a sore thumb.
The one thing I always keep in mind when I paint a car is ,that I'm not paying for professional results so It doesn't have to be perfect. Most people won't see the flaws untill you point them out:eek:

True, unless another painter see's it haha

I hate preparing a vehicle thats going black. Sanding was not my favorite thing to do. Thankfully, you can bey real good filling primers nowadays.

Yep, paint is very expensive if you go top of the line paints like Diamont I will be using Glasurit (sp?) clear. These paints are used on the high end cars like Audi, Mercedes... The red was over $500 a gallon!! Now I could have gone with Limco or Omni they would have cost less for sure.

I agree with you, black will show everything, I was saying/joking that my prep was so bad I might need to paint it with a roller.

Picture of truck as I got it.

OK, now just showing off. This is a 1971 Cutlass I got out of the junk yard. Within one year I had turned it into a 1972 Chevelle convertible. The paint on the hood and trunk are alittle like gost stripes. I had a template made with thousands of little Bow ties. At a distance it looks like a solid strip, but the closer you get you see whats in the pictures below. Proud to say this is my work.

WOW!!!!!! Not your first trip around the block. Very nice.
Are you going to do little "PMD CABLE"logos all over on the truck before the clear coat?:D:D

Wow is right. You and BASFman sure sound like good friends to have!

That looks fantastic Leroy. I'd be proud as hell to show of that work too.

$500/gallon for the paint?!? It better come with a mouth!

Just a straight forward paint job on this one :smile5:

My Suburban might just turn up in your shop at painting time!

I remember why I don't paint for a living......Im wore out. Soon it will be over.
So, please don't bring yours over, Im good for atleast a year ):h

Got it in the booth and wraped up. Some final wipe down/prep and hopefully it will get some color tomorrow. (forgot my damn camera last 2 days)

I know its crazy the way we justify things, $500 a gal for paint is OK, but Im pissed about $3.00/gal diesel

I want that 72 GMC in the backround...Paint is through the roof mostly because of all the envirocrap. Stuff has changed so much since my days in the body shop it's like a lesson all over again everytime I go to buy some. I painted many vehichles with my 20 yr old Sharpe 775(the industry standard back in the day) and last time I went to paint the wife's Honda after a run in with a deer I had to buy a new Devilbiss Top loader and learn how to use it FAST as I already had paoint mixed in the Sharpe that wouldn't spray Low VOC paint correctly. I literally poured the mixed paint($$$) into the new gun and took a quick pratice spray and ran wth it. Job laid out nice although I think I wowuld still use the Sharpe for Straight Enamel only cause I'm used to the way it sprays. Black is the color I used to paint everything for two reasons. It's the cheapest color to buy and easiest to match. There are only basically two shades of black, Ditzler black and GM Black(GM black has a greasy look to it, Ditzler more of a blueish tint). Not sure if that holds true nowadays but 20 yrs ago that was it. BTW Anyone know where the paint code is on our trucks ? I gotta get some for my dually. I may use two stage so I can do some touch ups on the doors as well as paint the Fender. Generally I go single stage with Black but may not this time.

Should be in the glove box.
