My K3500 Dually 6.5TD Thread

well....took the old girl in for her physical today, and she failed.

the stearing box is too loose they said.

so i ordered one from napa.

are their remans worth a damn or should i have looked around first???

cost me $250 plus $250 for core.

is that expensive?

I thought the gear box was adjustable. There is a nut and a screw located on the side/top of the gearbox that adjusts the gear lash, it can be touchy but that's what would try before buying a new one. Just have to loosten the nut and turn the screw in a little at a time but not to tight it can cause the steering to feel like it is dragging. The steering wheel should still move freely.

i can't remember exactly what they said but i think the shaft that the pitman arm hooks to is loose coming out the bottom of the box or something of the sort.

avoid turning that screw!! Ferm wrote a great write up in the DIY section on how to rebuild a box with adjustment procedures as well.

it's not that it's out of adjustment, something is loose that holds that bottom pitman arm shaft in place.

is there a bearing in there or something?

ferm's write up was just for adjusting it.

ok,while changing the steering box,i figured i better change the leaking oil cooler lines.

OF COURSE i bitched the cooler itself.:mad2:

i want to go with an after market cooler and the teflon and stainless braided lines.

does anyone know which brand is best and where the best deals are?

ok,now that she is on the road(legally),it's tune up and add on time.

first is injectors and glow plugs.

is there a special tool ie:socket for the injectors that i should be looking for,or will a deep socket work?

what would be the best glow plug out there, and does any of the vendors on here carry them?

thanks for any ideas,Mark

There is a special socket that you can also use a wrench on it, I just use a Westward 6 point deep socket.

For glow plugs Bosch Duraterms or AC Delco 60g's

Heath carries the Bosch glow plugs, I got mine from NAPA at a lower price and it was near, so no shipping.

cool,i got a napa 14 miles away in the next town over.

nice to know they have them.

i spose a stealer would have the delco ones right?

is one better then the other,or do they act and last the same?

Mark

Most on here say the Bosch are a bit better. I've never used the AC's so I can't say.
