Ok.Now that I have finally got this thing on the road thanks to Simon(Bison),it's time to get some of the other issues out of the way.

I high jacked another thread for a short bit to find out the right size pully I need on my alternator to make the tach read properly.

I was told i need a 62mm pully and that is what I have.

At idle the tach reads 300 and by the time the motor gets up to about 1500-2000rpm the tach is is right off the chart.

Now,I have been told by a buddy that he heard that the regulator might have something to do with how the tach reads.

Is there anything to the regulator thing?

Crank pulleys are all the same. I'd bet your alternater is ready to take a dump. Others have posted erratic tach shortly before alt dies. I had one go all over the place just before it locked up and broke the case.

yeah,i was thinking of just replacing it and keep this as a short term back up if ever needed.
what is the best brand of alt to get,and where to buy ?

picked up a Champion reman 105A alt today at Part Source for $121.59 + tax and core with a 3 year warranty.

gonna install hopefully tomorrow and see if it fixes my tach reading.

next up will be questions about other electrical issues with dash and gauges.

the wait to start light no come on and the temp gauge works only when it wants and all of a sudden it will peg out to the end and the check gauges light comes on.

of course i will check the bulb for WTS light, but would be nice to hear a few ideas of what to look for with the temp gauge when i get at it.

I can't remember which way it is but grounded wire will either be full cold or hot. Open wire would be the opposite. Could be poor connections bad grounds etc.

yes,i am going to do my grounds and do all new battery cables and ground wires too if needed.

just gotta do a search for that thread that showed the pics of where they are all at,lol.

hope it fixes the gauge issues cause electrical is my worst subject.so everyone please bare with me cause there will be many "stupid" questions when it comes to that kinda stuff.

well...the new alt. didn't do a damn thing for the tach.

am at a loss again.

didn't quite get all the grounds done cause a buddy stopped by and whiskey got involved.

would a bad ground make the tach all goofy???

the reason i am wondering is because i want to run a ground wire right from the battery to that point.

then if the problem still exists,i can look for something different.

new development.....i think the instrument panel is out of a gasser.

the guy who had it before me must have changed the damn thing to this one.

i'm GUESSING this is probably my tach issue?????

i found one at a wrecker for a diesel and will stick it in hopefully tomorrow.

my next question is,what do i need to do about the speedo???

i'm sure the 1/2 ton it came out of didn't have 4.10 gears.

is it something in the instrument panel that reads the speed or the truck computer???

so actually i should be fine then because it is all done before the speedo.
it just tells the speedo what to say???

what about the tach???if the panel is from a gasser, would that be why it is out to lunch??

I don't know if the signal from the ecm is read the same by a gas cluster and a diesel cluster.

well..according to everyone the pulley size on the alternator is different on a gas.that's why i'm thinking something might be reading wrong somewhere.

i sure hope this different cluster fixes my problem.

oh yeah, the temp gauge was all buggered up too,any ideas on that one??lol

jebus i hate electrical.

well...i hope this other cluster works for me.

should i be looking for any other parts for this at the wrecker? ie:sensors, wire harnesses, etc. ?

ok,the new cluster works nice.

tach works, speedo seems good but will check against my other truck.

STILL have a temp gauge that is doing what it wants.

is there some way of testing the sending unit and see if it is faulty?
