My 2005 Yukon XL

Trip was a success.

First off i started noticing a driveline vibration on the way down at 75 to 80-MPH. Never had felt this before, but rarely get to 75-MPH locally to home.

I did get the notorious u-joint squeak starting faint while coasting, then becoming more pronounced during acceleration while we were down in TN. Checked the joints, no play noted. We did check for play prior to leaving too, but this is something you just can't identify!

Total trip:

We will be pulling the rear for new joints. May be pulling the front as well for piece of mind.

Sounds like a pretty good trip without any major issues. What part of Tennessee did you go to?

Usually you can find that bad ujoint by temperature. Be careful though they can get quite hot without having noticeable slop
I had that thought going through my mind on the way home. How hot that sucker could get.

Same as last year, touristy Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg as the kinds like the stuff on the "strip".

I would assume you all took in Dollywood while you were there? I have been to Pigeon Forge many times over the years, I can be there in less than 1.5 hours. We use to go for 3 or 4 days at a time, shopping, eating big, Dollywood and a trip to Cades Cove. Hadn't been there in about 5 or 6 years though, we haven't really had much time for a vacation. We have to stay close to home, my in-laws are in bad health, the live near us.

Actually out of the 3x we have gone not yet to Dollywood. It's tough to justify the cost as my offspring are all young (5y, 3y and 4mo) to do most stuff.

We did do the Stampede dinner attraction for the 2nd time and the kids absolutely loved it. I was disappointed during this visit as the pre-show live guitar ripping banjo guys werent there.

Yuppie hiked (paved path) to clingmans dome, did Cades cove as well. For the first time this year we did Tuckaleechee Caverns. My first time "spelunking"!

I hear you about Dollywood, it's not cheap going in there and most of the rides are for older kids, plus adults. Once your kids gets old enough to ride those rides they will really enjoy it. I think Dollywood just added another roller coaster this year. We use to get a season pass and if we went in there 2 or 3 times a season, it pretty well paid for its self.

Back to the Yukon, it's nice to have a larger vehicle if you have 3 kids, that's a plus. I hope it serves you well for a long time. I'm sure you will have to do a few minor things now and then, but their pretty durable vehicles.

We will definitely have to keep it in mind, my dad used to take us to a lot of the theme parks. Will be fun to enjoy the rides with my kids when the age/size comes! Sounds like next year will be a trip to the ocean down south. I assume Myrtle Beach or the like as grade school spring break will be late April. I hope its warm enough.

I was initially going to settle for a Tahoe/Yukon when I was in the market (I had a GMT400 in high school that I loved), but kept telling myself I want the space of the XL or Suburban. So glad I kept with that mentality, the back was full to darn near the roof with 7 passengers on this trip!

My biggest fear is its going to rot away like everything else does here due to the abusive salts/liquids. My intention is to fluid film yearly, and drive it less in the winter months and let it sit with the plow on it. Problem is I prefer driving it over my company truck, and what good is a vehicle you cant drive. Hope the fluid film is the right answer. Secondary fear is the 4l60e, my dad never had good luck with them but I always chalked it to his driving habits. The trans did get hot going up to Clingmans dome. Like 215-F as we sat in 1.5 hours of traffic, might change the fluid again this summer. It definitely needs a bigger trans cooler eventually.

When the shop over in Citrus Heights California OHd the 4L60E in my 93, He recommended an auxiliary cooler ahead of the radiator. Told Him, just do it.
I didnt have a temp gauge on that transmission but it was still functioning at 100,000 miles when I sold the truck and that guy finally destroyed the engine at over 350,000 miles. Too stupid to install a coolant pump and run it out of coolant several times. Trans had about 150,000 on that rebuild. No problems.

Theme parks I've done either individually as a youth or on vacation with family, and when there for the first, and sometimes only, visit. Elitch Gardens, Denver, CO (summers of 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71 with family), Disney World (12/72 family), Disney Land (12/73 family), Universal Studios (12/73 family, 7/77 solo, 12/92 my own family) Worlds of Fun, KCMO (7/74 family, 6/95 my own family 8/09, 10/12 & 7/13 wirh friends), Adventureland, Des Moines, IA (5/75, family) Magic Mountain, Santa Clarita, CA (7/77, solo). I would definitely like to get back to see some of them again.

I never got great longevity out of Fluid film.

I'd hit it 3 times a year with that stuff.

I had better luck with oils - anything I had handy - Marvel, any lubricating or protecting oil, whenever I was under a vehicle.
and Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector. - nasty stuff - Best wear a good respirator.

Unfortunately my ability to do my own service deteriorated and so did our vehicles.

I could never find anyone interested in coating/oiling for hire.

Welp, plans changed again. Found an oil leak on my 21 F250 (with 46K-miles) work truck after noticing a smell, drips on the ground and then finally smoke. I don't know what to make of this as the Company pays a guy to do the oil changes. I need to go back to the truck file and see when my last change was, but I haven't missed one yet with the dash minder.

The above meant I needed to drive my Yukon to work. Leaving me no time for driveshaft reconditioning. I only pulled the rear to get a quick day turn. The u-joint at the rear diff is nearly seized.

Shaft has new HD non-serviceables and a balance.

Noticed a leak originating from the pinion nut. Grabbed the nut and it was loose! Torqued it to an ugga dugga by hand for now. Will need to keep an eye if it comes loose again. I should have put some blue locktite on it now that I think about it. Wonder if the driveline vibes loosened it up over the trip....

How does that affect the depth of your pinion gear to ring gear meshing and the crush washer for pinion bearing preload, or is none of that a concern with that style/year of rear differential?
To be honest I think it is a concern. I believe there is a crush sleeve in there, I just tried to tighten it up and not crush it down anymore. But no real way to know at this point. Really needs to be checked with a dial indicator on the ring gear along with pattern.

I would like to milk this set out until I swap to 4.10s.

I slightly crushed one down once. Took a pinion shim and stacked onto the crush sleeve then readjusted crush and called it good.
