Help...My truck overheats when towing...

OK, so finally I own a 6.5TD that DOESN'T overheat like mad...(Title of the thread was for fun since my overheating threads come aroudn this time annually...:D )
Overall the Dually towed really good and only got hot on a few long hills and not by much. So far list of cooling system work done:
New stock 2000 WP (AFAIK this is the one that comes with certain cooling upgrade kits)
Stock 9 blade steel fan with Hayden Severe duty clutch
Pulled rad , AC cond , oil cooler etc and steamed them. Truck already had green antifreeze so put same back in.
Catectomy.
Overall it was pretty good. Most of the time the Hayden kicked in around 200-210 and the temps dropped FAST. What was quirky was when I was really pusing the truck hard up a lng grade the Hyaden seemed to take longer to engage around 215-220 and then pulled the temps down to 210-200. It seems the fan clutch mod maybe the key here to get it to kick in a little sooner. That or something is plain out wrong with it.
Otherwise the truck is night and day different from the last two I have owned. I really think MGW was on the right track with the modified Horton electric fan clutch. Gonna stop now cause power here is flicker in and out. More later.

Just so happens I have old WP from my Fathers Powerstroke and the old water pump from the dually so I can play around with the whole pressing the flange off thing without spending any money. It seems with these trucks that no matter which clutch you use the fluid driven clutchs are slightly errectic. Like I said this truck is 100x better and the highest it hit was about 21-220 for maybe 30 seconds. I thin if the clutch would kick in sooner that problem would go away. when the Hayden SD clutch locks up, YOU KNOW IT. No question about whether the fan is running that is for sure. Dually ran great other than the brand new FSU I got from Advnace Auto took a crap. I'm pissed but I was planning on taking the bed off the truck to finish descaling and painting the chassis so I guess now I have a reason to do it sooner than later although if the next Advance one dies that quick I'm going to kill someone at the factory. BTW The SU was made in Canada so I may need someone from up north to deliver my death threat to the manufacturer ...One bad one could be coincidence, two bad ones and they are making low grade junk so I'll see.

BTW Powerwise the truck pulls good stock. I did notice some coal rolling under heavy pulling passing uphill towing. Another thing I noticed is when climbing hard it's best to drop the truck into 3rd so that fan spins faster.

Congrats Kenny, it's been a long "hot" road for ya, and I'm glad it's workin' out!

-Rob :)

P.S. Truck's a beauty!

I'm really itchin to mess witht he Fan clutch. I think I'm really close this time. Just get that thing to kick in a little earlier and more consistent. I know I said in another thread somewhere that i talked to Horton and practically begged them to consider making a clutch setup for a 6.5TD. I think every one who owns a 6.5TD would buy it.

Wonder if on the long hills ground speed is bled off more & heated air from rad not being forced over fan clutch thermostat as quickly resulting in greater lag in clutch engaging?

Do the mod, no worries, LOOSEN :) it an 3/16 " and take it from there. The other option is the D-MAX fan seems to pull more air at lower RPM's so it may help the new clutch engage better without modding it.

You can easiely make a 2nd adjustment without fear of breaking anything if need be.

It'll be 3 years for me next month no alcohol. I'm a quitter. Best thing I ever did.
