Help...My truck overheats when towing...

No doubt the big tires kill me. I'm not willing to downsize, and swapping to 4:56 would be cost-prohibitive. Maybe I should see what fits what, I've got 235/85s on my 82 dually, couple inches shorter. Be nice to swap them onto the 97 and see how it pulls.
Could check the math and find out what my actual final ratio is with the 33s. I do know I am fighting them for power. Other than the big hills it's always right where I want it, though. 4:56s or 4:88s might not be what I want either.

I just couldn't see my truck with weenie tires on it.

Go to grimmjeeper(dot)com, click on the gear ratio calculator and play around with that to give you ideas what tire diameter and gear ratio will do for you.

ok i am trying to follow this to the end that since i have the front off my baby right now i am hopeing to get a part number a hi volume wp if someone can give it to me i will fax them a beer
 
Order it for a 2000 K3500 6.5TD. That is supposed to be the best one and the part Number Heath mentioned in his articel was this exact WP. I checked it with the Chevy dealer awhile back. It is nbot cheap, it is about 200$ for a new one which if you add in the fan and clutch and stats Heaths whole kits price isn't really bad, I just didn't need all that since mine was a 2000 and had it anyway and I was helll bent on trying the Hayden SD clutch with the stock 9 blade.
 
Actually his kit went up aliot in price since I bought one. The fan alone is still a good deal though. The Hayden SD clutch is 149$ alone.
 
What I'd really like to see is what TD is running. The first gen Heath fix. I think to date it's still the best. Too bad he stopped offering it. It looked easy enough to replicate if we only knew what was in that can....:D

My 97 6.5TD overheated the first time I towed a trailer. All I had on the trailer was a 64 Jeep.

What I really liked was your 1st gen Balance flow. That was a nifty setup. it's a shame my truck was being a bitch that day or I could have spent more time studying what you had. BTW Still in NY ? I completley forgot to mail that PMD. Not an ungrateful person, just very absent minded latley :smile5:
 
Gotta get that from TD. He may have pics on the old site. it's prety cool. It ties into the coolant passages on the rear of the head(which are clocked with plates, they would be used if the heads were swapped for the crossover). They tie into a mystery can and then to a special crossover with a 3/4(IIRC) Nipple welded in. Would not be hard to replicate except I don't know if that can had anything in it or just joined the hoses together.
 
Item he is referring to is the Balance Flow setup, that Bill used to sell before he started marketing the "Balanced cooling" system pump-fan-clutch-stat he sells now (you need all to get max benefit), I have balanced cooling on both my vehicles now, which was a vast improvement over the OEM setup I have yet to even come close to overheating.

Over on the old site, I did several articles on Balanced flow you'll have to use the advanced search engine there to find them a lot of the older "good stuff" is buried.

Their site unless things have changed with the Auto Forums bunch should work the same as advance searches work here, say go to the 6.5 forum on the forum tool bar it says search this forum, click it, and advanced search

Then in quotations type in the key word search block type "balance flow" then over in the search by user fill in me in this instance Id be Turbine Doc there also then click the search now button near the bottom and it should pop up the balance flow stuff.

That works here as there, if you want to be overloaded just do a search by member, I think back in the day before the AF hostile takeover :D I was @ maybe 11k+ posts there, also be sure to search look for posts by JiFaire, MGW, GMCTD, NVMTNLION, KNKREB, ACES, MATTB, CHEVYINLINE (if you weren't plugged out no harm meant):thumbsup: but just about any of the regulars here were there, dirty secret most of the "good stuff" there was authored & taught there by folks here, but I digress AF members that dual post @ both sites my apology I don't mean to open old wounds, PM me if you feel the need to discuss.

Any who, if you don't find what we haven't had time to re-create here, it's probably covered over there, under same user names you see lurking around here you just have to know how to access it.
 
I have it still on the truck it was paid for figured it could not hurt, way it worked after instrumenting a engine Bill hired a thermo engineer to crunch some numbers, they found that left and right head banks at different rpms cooled unevenly. Locking the thread for a few while I compose response before taking questions .... Wait, wait; wait for it.
 
So "As I was sayin"; the 1st attempt at solution to the uneven cooling was to tap into the 2 ports on the back of the engine and combine the flows into a balancing chamber and readmit it to the coolant stat housing, worked, but not fully, the GM late model water pump had too much flow so a metering orifice had to be added to that pumps bypass to really nail it down which is something you did not see Kenny & I forgot to remember/mention when you saw it.

Bill did some more R&D thru his contacts that deal with the military Hummers found a mil-spec pump that carries the same p/n as a std GM pump but has a different impeller IIRC, and a mil-spec fan clutch (something to do with the type of viscus fluid in it) and got the same results on other "balance flow" trucks as I was getting.

The manufacturing costs to have the stainless parts cut/fabbed went up, as did cost of the hose material, so rather than try to maintain supply/sourcing for that he opted to go with the "balanced system" approach.

My burb was having issues, bought the "system" spotless cleaned the rad/condenser, new stats, have run it to 100+ mph on 100+F days with the ATT tests and no IC, it never ran hot but did defuel once I hit high IAT, so as far as I'm concerned it is all one needs at this point to keep their 6.5 cool.
 
See, hee hee...I bought that system and my truck still overheated.That thing should have been studied. Alas it's probably in the junkyard by now. Last I knew the engine blew. Not sure what he did with the truck. That was the thing I didn't get about Bill's article. when I called GM with that Part # it was the same WP as was factory on my 2000 as well as the Humvee so I don't see the difference nor could the GM parts dealer tell me one. Truck is actually not bad(My 2000). I think if I can get the fan to kick in a little earlier it will be good to go. You know Frank might have been onto somehing cause when you think about it, When the fan locks up, yes it pulls air but it also makes the engine work harder. I just quetion whether an elec fan setup could be fitted to these trucks that would pull the equivelent of the factory steel fan or Dmax fan.
 
You know I have not poked my head in Steel Soldiers in awhile. I wonder if the guys over there in the Humvee section could shed some light. Inquiring minds want to know.
