Help...My truck overheats when towing...

Yeah I was considering that. That is why an electric clutch is really the perfect solution.

Or a HMMWV hydraulic clutch, think thats what I'd install since its a bolt-on on the older water pumps. Need to find a fan and time to try mine, but dont really need it since I dont tow much anymore with the 6.5's.

But since you got a good fan clutch, I think a D-max fan would be a good ideal, then tweak the kick-in temps from there.

I installed my Dmax fan last weekend and it keeps it cool alot easier down the highway and around town. I did take my truck muddin after a 4in rain and about bit off more than I could chew, (the 6.5 did 100% better than my 305 would have done, it just kept digging) the truck started running ~220 but cooled off as soon as I started moving again. The clutch mod might have helped but the new fan is a start!

Kenny, if you do the clutch fan mod, read the thread carefull so you don't F it up like I did. I went the wrong way, almost cooked my motor, pulled it out and went the other way, now it's on all the time.
I think I'm going to find a Dmax fan, mod my fan shroud for a tigher fit, and look at maybe replacing the fan clutch. I don't know if I dare mod it again, that little strip isnt made to be bent a million times.
Who am I kidding, I'll bend it one more time to try to get it right before I replace it.

I read that thread. If you need another bimetallic strip let me know. I have the stock clutch of my truck. The shaft is ruined from Mr. Torch but the strip should be ok. Truck actually pulls really good. Your problem is them big o tires...:D

No doubt the big tires kill me. I'm not willing to downsize, and swapping to 4:56 would be cost-prohibitive. Maybe I should see what fits what, I've got 235/85s on my 82 dually, couple inches shorter. Be nice to swap them onto the 97 and see how it pulls.
Could check the math and find out what my actual final ratio is with the 33s. I do know I am fighting them for power. Other than the big hills it's always right where I want it, though. 4:56s or 4:88s might not be what I want either.

I just couldn't see my truck with weenie tires on it.

Big o Tires aint no problem Ace! :) If it is, you got a lot of problems bro!

Link got harder to find in search for me too. I had to find it to doublecheck myself after answering the question in another thread to make sure it was right!

LOOSEN the coil. The little bent tab will get SHORTER. By doing this it turns the shaft ever so slightly, so the final movement will also happen earlier.

I think this is changing the % of grab on the clutch from idle on. I think its a good thing. I know I just said it recently, but since I DMAX FANNED it with my MODDED CLUTCH set up for my plow, it pulls the hot radiator air in enough to activate the fan shortly after my Coolant temp starts to climb at all. This is really fantastic because most of the time it seems to come on right before I want it to, so its already going when I know its going to be a warm pull. Its so perfect I couldn't design it any better.

A hayden clutch would be fantastic, but thats a 1000 mod at the least last time we digged into this, and modding the clutch as GMCTD suggested hes been doing for decades on all sorts of viscous clutch setups is a 99/100 compared to the Hayden.

Its free and quick! Thanks GMCTD!

I'm running 235's but I think these trucks come with 225's. That is what my factory spare was. it defintely sits a bit higher and the speedo is off about 5 mph at 60mph.

Before you condemn your truck for pulling so poorly with zero fuel pressure, perhaps you should resolve that issue and give the thing a fair chance with some positive fuel pressure while pulling hard :nono: :)

I butchered my stock clutch anyway trying to get it off. PO locktited it on I think. wait, you know this, you were there when I was wrestling with it...:D

I want to find tha thread again. I'm glad in a way you couldn't find it either. Now I don't feel as stupid. I don't remember what you had to do to reseal it.

I'll find it, just goop a little silicone or rtv in there. Its just to hold the tab.

I had to find it linked off my dmax fan thread.

!
Bigger tires helped my CUCV... Our engines don't have a huge rpm range and has an even narrower sweet spot IMHO. One thing I noticed right away when I put BIGGER tires on my CUCV was the truck actually had MORE power cause with the 4.56's and the tiny tires(which are now on my Dually) it was tachin and buzzing right by it's "Powerband" for lack of better term. Not saying that is Dan's issue since I don't know his gearing or truck but in my case tires made a positive difference.

Thanks. That is getting printed this time. I nominate that thread for a sticky...Any seconds ?

A long time coming. Not only is not a sticky, but someone moved it or hid it from search engine. :)

BTW, I was joking about the big tires. Defanately gears you down in a big way. But they look damn good! (I was referring to all your vehicles past n present)
