Ether; use it or not, some say yea, some say nay.

I got once towed 6 mls to home after a accident ( cause the attending cop would'nt let me pick the truck up myself,he called the towtruck) That set me back $325.I have to work a full day to make that back.( i have no use for cops either)
Besides,I live out in the bush and like to pull up my own pants.

Same here for the price of the tow I can usually fix it myself.

6 mile tow for $325 is just down right abusive....We have a similar program in NY...All rates are set by our governing body (Dept. of Consumer Affairs) - Assuming that was a program tow, Tow Co. would be bound by rates set - Complain to the forces that be, as it will stay with th the Tow Co.......You should be reimbursed and the Co. should pay a fine for price gouging.....Ex. Program tow rates~ $80 hook up $4.00 per mi.= $104 + tax.

Unfotunatley guys like that give the industry a bad name.

Rates are set in NY. I used to drive a wrecker in NY. IN CT like every other profession, They charge what they want. That's why my equipment trailer has a winch....:)

Good idea, but what you gonna do when the veh your driving at the moment dont want to start on a cold morning out in the campground or where ever you may be.

That is why I always carry a tool box and a few spare parts. I have yet (Knock on wood) been stranded on the side of the road so bad I could not fix it myself.

It is amazing what you can do with duct tape, pliers, screwdriver, and a few beers! ):h

Mass Pike when I use to tow off it (10yrs ago) the job went to the lowest bidder (same with City of Worcester)... Therefore, the tow outfit equipted to handle it would have to do it for the cheapest to get the volume of busines..

It was like 45hookup 3bux a mile, OR $50.00 Gets you back to to tow garage.

Not too bad.

I do everything possible to avoid tows also. Usually wrecker drivers say 'that thing weighs moer than me' Then I use my experience on them... Nah... It sonly 7000lbs.. Just sling it... I'll drive that thing if you're scared...

Then they feel challenged and don't refuse :) She's heavy on the hook :) AAA Plus!!!!

The last guy actually said to me 'Will that thing stay running if I leave it in Neutral?" lol.. I said Of Course...(Then thought about it stalling LOL)...

That was my Front Wheel hub assy loss day of work....

Lost day work -300
AAA PLus - FREE :) ($120 for the year 8 tows 4 for me, 4 for the misses)
Wheel Hub 240
Front Axle - 70

610 dollar net...

Imaging poor fools that have to pay for a tow AND pay the mechanic for repair?? I see why it would be cheaper for alot of poeple to 'just buy new;

Could defanately quiet down the ol' lady in the passenger seat and enjoy a few moments of peace while on the side of the road 'looking her over'. :)

Only Consenual tow is not bound by rates.....Law enforcment tow should have a cap....it's worth looking into anyway - Plenty a program tow rates abused everywhere, buyer beware.

Matt is right - Even I'm a AAA Gold member...it's just too cheap not to have....They'll even bring you fuel and change a flat tire - Nothing to think about there IMO.

No, like he said, it's Canada. If the cop had called for the tow truck, there was nothing he could do about it. He could probably call and complain, but chances are he would get the reception office located out of the States. We've learned up here that once a complaint crosses the border, most people don't give a rip.

As for not ever using it, that's your call. But, when you are sitting somewhere, with no cell phone reception, no running truck, and temperatures dropping, I'll use fluid to fire mine and then come give you a tow.

As a little terrorist once said, "Location, location, location!"

If the cop had called for the tow truck, there was nothing he could do about it.

This is my point why there should be rates applied - Law enforcment gives you no choice, so they add insult to injury and hit you for $325 for a 6 mile tow? No Gov angency protects the public for Nonconsenual tow?

So the Tow Co. in Canada have no Governing body?.....Can anyone go run a wrecker with no tow license, medallion or credentials certified to tow vehicles?

I'm comming to Canada!
Hey Leo, do you have any space up there where I can hang a sign?

I think I'll call it North View Wrecker service.....
Waddayathink?

I hear ya. Towing was cutthroat 10 yrs ago in NY I can only imagine now. Not to mention NY has the highest insurance rates in the country.

See what I mean:smile5:The vultures are allready landing on the fenceline, ready for the pickings.
I actually had a huge argument with that cop that day,he wanted the truck towed to the nearest town 35 mls away.I said, like hell it aint:icon_bs:,you aint gonna run me another charge to get it back home again. He just pointed at his badge(arrogant prick).I said, take it off, and we'll settle the matter right here:smash:(that just about got me in the slammer):D.
End of story, truck went home instead.:seeya:
