Eratic behavior from an 85' 6.2 (more below) requesting help please (Two vids in one)

What type of guage do you suggest, then?

I only choose that since I'm trying to match the style of guages
An.electric gauge. I haven't found one I'm wild about yet.

O e that showed vacuum would be ideal.

It would clearly show when your lift pump wasn't working at all and you were just running off the injection pump.

I would also like a combination dial and digital readout.
 
@MrMarty51 has a nice setup for his fuel pressure gauge. you don't have to but he setup two gauge sending units on his, one before the fuel filter and one after (up by the IP) and has a toggle switch in the cab to use them on the same gauge. flip the switch one way to see pressure before the fuel filter and then flip it again to see what is at the IP. this helps diagnose when it's time to replace the fuel filter along with other helpful diagnostics.


as far as other gauges, a trans temp can be tied into the lines feeding the trans cooler. just be sure to tie into the one coming out of the trans before the cooler, not the one coming back into the trans. I would avoid plumbing one into the pan to avoid any possible leaks in the future.


one other gauge is a EGT (exhaust gas temp) this is where you drill and tap a hole into your exhaust manifold below the turbo so you can monitor exhaust temps. iirc anything over 1200 deg is bad for these engines.


for my wish list I would like to have the following on my rigs.... Boost (already have), fuel pressure, EGT, trans temp, rear diff temp, engine oil temp, and overdrive temp (I have a gear vendors overdrive unit attached to the rear of the trans). And of course make the dash look like a Peterbilt HAHA.

100% DO NOT run fuel line into the cab. An electric fuel pressure gauge is worth the extra money. I’d rather a guy not have a fuel pressure gauge than run fuel line into the cab, and that’s exactly what I did myself in the past.

On the transmission- yeah if you can jump to the 4l80e it will live better. The OD ratio is slightly better the the smaller one, but not worth it imo. Idk if you would need a controller with it I think to make the change- I would think so.

What air hose inlet do you all run? My old one fell apart and im in need of a new one, someone told me to hit up Lowes and make a DIY one

But what do you all recommend?

(I'm aware the air filter housing has holes in it, am trying to get another one)

Oil bath filter on the 1959 Dodge, got out the acetylene torch and brazed the oilage leakage holes full. No more leakage.
 
Fellas this is going to be random, but how often do you change your oil? I live on my installation, so my work is literally 1.5 miles away, along with the DFAC and other stuff. I literally only go into town once or twice a week (20 minute drives one way)

ive been told how often I drive it determines how often I need to change it, I currently change it every 3K miles
 
3k is the normal for this engine. But your use, yourfuel,your oil choice, condition of engine all can change that.

Towing a lot shortens it, city driving shortens it, all kinda of variables.

The best thing to do is send a sample off to blackstone labs (or similar) and find out how long your oil actually last you for your uses.

I had a gasser suburban that I ran on 30,000 mile intervals- that isn’t a typo.

Ill be as specific as I can be

Pretty much everything i drive to is practically within a 3-5 mile interval, it is currently winter here in the north midwest region.

I don't tow, and yes I do alot of stopping (city driving i suppose)
 
Engine condition will also have a lot to do with it. how much blow by it has can change things. I might put 4k miles on mine in a year but try to do an oil change every 6 months.
Well, my motor was swapped in as stated before, it's at 78K miles (compared to the vehicle which itself has 238K miles on it)

It doesnt seem to have blowby at all
