Buying a Suburban - 6.5l vs Vortec

a 5.7 1500 will have a 4l60 (aka not worth the metal its made of )

the 6.5 will always have a 4l80

that would make my decision in seconds.

that was one of the major factors. Well we are pushing off in about 2 hours (I have to drop my wife off at work on the way). They boys are already up and excited.

Camping without the .45? He does not have to "think" I am bringing a gun, he should assume.

I heard a story from someone I know - when a highway patrol officer stopped him and asked for his registration and license, the trooper noticed the concealed-carry-weapons permit in his wallet. The trooper asked: "Sir, are you a CCW permit holder?"

My friend said "Yes officer, I am."

The trooper said "Why didn't you give me your CCW permit when I asked for your ID and registration?"

My friend said "You did not ask for my CCW, and my understanding is that you assume everyone is carrying a weapon anyway. Is that not so?"

The trooper smiled and said "Yes, that's true. Don't drive so fast. I'm letting you off with a warning."

The reason I took the vortec out of my 97 truck was because it was a gas hog,10-11 around town and 14 highway. Also the vortecs have there own problems like wet dist caps and leaking intake gaskets, and then the rod bearings go ,also a few of them will stick the exhaust valves on a long pull,I just repaired one that must have stuck open to long, since it was bent, there is a tsb on the valve issue. It seems some suburbans with the vortec 350 are geared too high, they don't run like the trucks and tahoes. I was looking for a Diesel burb but they are hard to find in our area,so we bought a tahoe for $900 which is going to get a 6.5. Fuel pumps go bad all the time also for the vortecs, especialy the plastic canister type.

Have you considered a 4bt or a mitsubishi or Isuzu in the Tahoe?
That was a project I always wanted to do. Several years away from that now, if ever.

About the same our 97 4x4 gasser Suburban was. The 1989 throttle body 350 we had did much better.

I thought of that, but I don't like exhaust sound of a 4cyl,plus the harmonics are also bad,if I'm doing Cummins swap it would be a 5.9,for now its just going to be a 6.5.

6500.00 Is way too much for a gasser burb with 100K+ miles. My 96K2500 at work with a 5.7 just got jnked at 123k. Motor was having all sorts of issues.. No way. 3500$ vehchile max IMHO. I agree with just putting a Banks on what you have. I love my Burb.Otherwise go for the diesel one. Look around some more sometimes you can find them even cheaper. I would not own a gasser("Patooie! Right JD ?? Where are YOU ??)
Also as pointed out a 4l80e is probably only second to an Allison. NOne of the other tranny even come close to a 4L80e. GM go that one right.

Brother in law got a nice red one gasser for about 800 bux... drives nice! However, my truck w/6.5 felt better. I can only imagine a nicely geared Suburban 6.5.. 4.11's with big tires.

I've never driven an empty pickup truck 6.5 modded up or stock. I bet they are quick!

I'm not sure what caused the difference in milage. I always attributed some of it to the fact that the 89 had manual lock-outs.
our 86 Ford conversion van with the 351 did about the same as the 97 350 burb.
the good thing is it made me say no more gassers

Well, we had a great time camping. It was a long car ride for the boys, but all in all they did well. We went to this little aquarium in crescent city and they got to pet a shark! Liam (my 2 year old) has not been feeling well and got sick on the way home. That was unfun.

The truck did not come home with us. The seller was supposed to meet me at my campsite friday evening but he was a no-show. When I got into cell phone range sat morning, I had two messages from him. The rebuilt transmission had some issues with overdrive. It is getting fixed under warranty and he offered to drive it to my place. I went and checked the suburban out and it was not as advertised. The windshield was cracked, antenna broken off at the base, replaced door not aligned properly, inside was a complete mess with badly torn front seats and a broken radio. Also the tranny work was/is done by a local to him shop, so the warranty had no value to me. I told him the best I could do was $3000 cash, no car, he drives it to my place and I get to cold start it and drive it before anything. He declined. At least I got to spend time with my boys.

To bad you live across the country, there is a sharp looking 6.5 burb near me at a car lot. I never stopped but it looks like a million dollars from the road.

Yeah, I am going to keep my search semi-local (5-6 hours driving time max). I will consider something further from a trusted forum member.

I really need to get on the ball and get something. 6 weeks until our due date and needing a vehicle that fits three car seats. Of course things can happen earlier or later.

I have been thinking of getting a gasser. Not many diesel subs out there to choose from.

Driving home, we saw a '99 5.7l sub for sale. I stopped and looked and it is a clean inside and out. It has a 150K, seller says it runs good (heard that before. It is close (about 45 mins) and I may go look at it today. He wants $3400.

What about the goofy emission laws they have in CA? Dont they test your cars? Im not sure what would be better living in a place like that. A gasser would probably be better for keeping up with the smog crap.
