A military rebuilt 6.5

I'm gonna wait to see soot levels in UOA comparisons. My bypass filter system was expensive and so are the filters. I hate to say it, but I see a centrifuge in my Xmas stocking.

That looks like a nice addition to the engine. Thanks for sharing that Leroy. Maybe Santa will bring me one this year....
Im really glad I put one on it.

I have the bug for one too.
I'll have pricing soon.

I got my supply of oil sample bottles yesterday and will be sending in a sample Monday. Got a dumb question, is the soot level something they automatically check or is it something I'll need to ask for/optional?
The centrifuge is "supposed" to filter down to 1/10 of a micron so "should" be catching soot. I have gapless rings so would think my soot level will be low. Anyone have a typical soot level measurement from doing UOA. Anyway whatever that was in my centrfiuge Im glad it not circulating in the engine anymore. I should have kept a sample of the tar and asked UOA company if they could analyze it.

WW says you have to request it in my UOA thread a week or so back. It's not a dumb question because I thought it would be automatic test in a diesel. It's not. My next sample will be sent out in a few weeks when I hit on the oil.

At 3K with the gapless rings my soot is 0. Make sure you ask for soot as well as TBN.
Note I am running 15w-50 in the engine so the lab was confused. Stepping up a grade is normally oil wearout/failure.

Ok going camping this weekend so pulling the camper for the first time. I'll report how it goes.
In bigger news, look what showed up today for installation in the coming weeks!! :D

Here are close ups of the pump. And I was mistaken, it isn't a bilge pump, it's a baitwell or livewell pump. I remembered there was a "b" in the name, but not being a fisherman all I could think of was bilge. image.jpgimage.jpg

Thanks Leroy, I can't see post numbers on my phone so I'll do some looking through that thread later.

Well got the campground fine. It doesn't do as well as I hoped it would for what I have put into this thing time and money wise but it's still a work in progress. I was running higher EGTs than I would like most of the way, but heeding War Wagon's advice I didn't worry about EGTs as much as I did ECTs. The highest the ECT readed was 203 so not too bad. I heard the fan come on today for the first time so it was good to know the clutch would kick in when it needed to. I had to shift the trans manually to get it to work the way I wanted. On flat land I could run overdrive but it really was happiest in drive. I am running 235/85s right now and I've been thinking they were a little tall with my 3.73s. I'm going to switch to 265/70s soon which will drop me an inch in OD. Between that and the intercooler I'm hoping it changes the towing character. Normal running at 60 mph was around 900 EGT and 5-7psi boost. Can't wait to get the intercooler on.

That was actually a bit inspiring Leroy, thanks. My plan was to install the IC radiator under the truck, basically under where the back seat is but I will explore to see if it can fit behind the bumper now. I think the one I have is thicker than yours so it may not go, but I will definitely give it a try. Thanks for the tip!

n8in8or, can you dive into that whole intercooler system for me? My iat's KILL me. That set up has my Attention, but other than google research, I've no idea where to start.

Sure thing Will. When I do the installation I'll start a new thread to detail it. I got the stuff from Frozen Boost, if you go to their website you can see the different options they have. I went water to air instead of air to air for a couple reasons: I like that the air column after the turbo is much shorter before it gets to the intake, and I also like that the mounting of the heat exchanger can be more flexible so it doesn't have to go in the skidplate position or in the cooling stack. Those are just my personal thoughts on it, not sure how valid they really are. I intend to make my own upper intake that will allow a straight shot from the turbo to the intake with the intercooler in between.

Depending on how big a sail area the RV has, probably about right.

If regular towing is in the future, might consider a 20% under-drive even with the OE size tires. Only trouble there is GV is the only current vendor and not sure whether the unit will allow starting in 'direct' versus 'under'.

Thanks for the feedback Jay. It's definitely more of a sail than a car hauler. It's amazing how much of a difference the size of the load makes even at the same weight.

It would be nice to do an under/overdrive but with my short wheelbase I'm not sure I can fit one. My driveshaft is already only about 3' long. I have another truck project waiting in the wings that will be a much better hauler so if I want to do a bunch of this hauling stuff I should probably make myself work on that.

Good looking Taco i mean Tahoe :)
OD would be a tight squeeze. Might have to hook output to pinion directly. The drive train would be one solid unit like a tractor ;)

That is not much of a sail area to me.

For comparison, I just did a test pull with a 7,200# 30' trailer that is taller (almost 5-er) tall and had slightly lower EGT's (IIRC ~700 @ 55 - 60 on flat).

My trailer is 6,500# 33' and about the same height as yours (~9-1/2' clearance due to the A/C) and the EGT's are ~600 at 55 - 60 on flat. I need about 2% grade to push up to 800F EGT.

Consider checking into the tune to see if it is commanding too much retardation. Naturally will defer to the better experts.

Oh, and by the way, I think Leroy meant to say 'Nice Ho' :D
