87 land yacht, long term project

Made the first set of cuts for the rock sliders that will be added soon, sadly found more rust than I was expecting inside the rocker panels

Little bit of time with a steel wire brush and things are cleaner. Outside the rockers alot of what your seeing is mud

Here at the trans hump was not rust but alot of thick grease, decided to hit it with the brush to speed things up when I sand or blast the underside of the cab

That it does. Overall this truck doesnt have much, only in a handful of spots. Most of what you see in the pics is mud thats still stuck to the rig. I need to replace the driver floor pan, you can see the hole in the last picture near the top right corner.

Worst rusty vehicle I've had was a 79 k5 blazer that I had about 6 years ago, don't think there was a single body panel with a rust hole smaller than a fist besides the hood hahaha. Miss that k5

did some more cutting, up to the floorboards so should have a few inches of extra ground clearance. Running 6x2x1/4" rectangular tubing, both pieces are 8ft long. once the cab goes back on the fenders will get trimmed to match.

Yes my welds suck right now, out of practice with my ark welder haha

Next few steps are to get a few friends to help me lay it back down, then borrow a mig welder and seal it up right. Then flip it back up, strip the underside, coat in POR15, then some thick layers of bed liner for protection and some sound deadening

Looks like an awesome project. Really excited that you did not go CTD on this build, love it when the 6.5 is still represented. I don't know if you need any more ideas/influence but here is one of the few CTD builds that I do like, this guy also went for strength and durability: Here.

Thanks, truck nearly had a cummins 12 valve in it, was almost finished and got fed up with all the discontinued drivetrain parts that people wanted small fortunes for so I yanked it back out and decided to keep it simple. Truck is slowly coming together thanks to my new job (working as a tech in the oilfield instead of an operator, better pay and fewer hours).

Picked up a little wire welder today to take care of the thin sheet metal welding, my ark welder is just too hot for the metal from the cab. Working this weekend but now have the welding on the underside of the cab finished for the new rockers, next is to get some sheet metal and replace the rusted out portion of my floorboard.

Floorpan is patched up and about 1/2 way through with sanding the underside of the cab. Also pulled the trans/tcase back out to make boxing the frame easier

Well my vacation plans for this week fell through so I used the time to work on the truck instead, made ALOT of progress over the past few days.

Underside of the cab now has 3 coats of POR 15 primer. Frame is also boxed from the engine bay to the end of the cab.

Also got this installed :D

Haven't gotten the motor fired up yet, installed it this afternoon before the cab went on in the evening. Wasn't planning to place the cab on today but since 2 of my room mates were home we were able to get it up there, probably entertaining for anybody passing by seeing 3 guys guiding a cab onto a truck frame haha.

Picked up a nv4500 on fleabay for cheap, should be here by next weekend. once it's here time to attach the np205 t-case behind it and bolt em up to the "new" engine, 4bd2t. I might have to move the engine mounts forward for some clearance but won't know for sure until the trans is installed. First test fit looks pretty good, think I'm going to have the same hydroboost clearance issue you had Leroy.

Probably won't make much progress tomorrow, helping a friend out with the brakes on her suv and having a BBQ at the house in the evening. Sunday will be sanding the firewall and the insides of the front fenders most likely. Need to get the truck looking like a 'complete' vehicle before the city throws a hissy fit again. Was going to put the junk 31" tires I have and deflate them to roll everything back inside the garage, but with the suspension sitting higher than it used to right now it won't clear the door frame haha. It's sitting about 7-8" of lift after the frame modifications, will be dropping that down to about 4-5".

Wont work. With the junk 31"s I would deflate them to almost flat and still scraped the door frame getting the truck in before. Now with the truck sitting another 2-3" higher....

This was taken when I brought the truck in on the flat 31"s last summer

Not sure if you saw my door opening. It was raised about 6-7" enough so I could get the 70 4x4 you saw in/out. Its on 33s and 7" of lift.
Looks like you could raise yours.

The actual door frame and wood trim wouldn't be bad. Have to cut the roof back about 2' because of how it overhangs the garage.

Not too worried about it though. Pulling the engine this week to clean/paint the firewall and engine bay. Next time the engine goes in (maybe the weekend after if I'm lucky) it will have the trans bolted to it, and the fenders/hood.

so much sanding to do! Floorboards and the firewall inside/out are done. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get the back wall and the roof finished. New gallon of POR15 should be here around wednesday so hopefully I'll have everything coated by the weekend after next (working next weekend).

Nv4500 transmission and the new input shaft for my np205 tcase will be here this week as well. Next thing to order is the paint to go over the POR15. Thinking I'll leave the interior and engine bay in the POR 15, then paint the rest of the body a flat charcoal grey. Should hide the stratches and minor dents that this truck will get pretty well and still keep it looking good.

well truck is at the painter now. I don't have the time to do the painting myself. Should have it back in 3-6 weeks. Just in time for the new dash to arrive! Clutch will be here tomorrow so I can get the engine/trans bolted together, then it's finish rebuilding the np205 and stick it behind the nv4500.
