6.5L TD Motorhome repair/repower

Good news and bad news,

Bad news first,

When I stopped in today to check on progress on my motorhome project, I was informed that there was a new problem. The tail shaft is too short on the new transmission to accept the tail piece the holds the E-brake assembly. Pictures attached.

Good news

I learned the there has been interest in the shop about what I'm going to do with the old engine. I also heard that someone else wants the old GM-2 turbo. Now I'll have to figure out how much to ask for them. What do you guys think?
I guess this proves that Peninsular's "one size fits all" doesn't fit all.
 
Used GM-2 low side $75 high $200 IMO.

Also, I think you said I should have your original oil cooler lines today? do you have a tracking #?
 
Well Leroy, that's what the counter person at the post office told me on Friday. Maybe tomorrow will be the day?
 
I'm having the installer check for the correct transmission, I may end up returning the wrong one to peninsular for a refund. They are after all an authorized Workhorse dealer and the lead mechanic working on my project is a factory authorized Workhorse technician.

Scrap metal is worth $125 a ton or so. So I would start with an "education" about the old turbo because you don't want any trouble later when they learn what a POS that turbo is. The old engine may be ok with repairs and worth $300 on up. It's $75 in scrap metal alone. What do I know maybe they want to turbo a Honda 4 banger with it?
 
$75 is fair.

I bet that yours has a unique output shaft due to the e-brake being there. 2wd and 4wd have different length shaft's as we all know.
 
While I'm waiting for responses on the transmission issue, I've been looking at other options. I checked with a local transmission remanufacturing business, Zumbrota Bearing and Gear. They don't build my type of transmission, but they could order a reman in. They also suggested an upgrade since I'm adding more horsepower. They said a "Road Ripper 2000" would be the one to get. Has anyone heard of it?
 
Never heard of it and your 4L80 can take anything your engine can produce. For a bit more beef, they could add some 4L85 parts.

Road Ripper is made by Certified Transmissions. It's a beefed up reman with a heavy duty torque converter.
 
The TC and over run (compression braking in 3 gear manualy selected) clutch in the transmission are the only weak areas I have found. The input shaft is also a weak area, but, I haven't broken one - yet.

A Yank TC with a triple disc clutch would be a good upgrade. Any Triple disc lockup converter would be better than the "weak" stock unit. Abused the stock TC is worth ~50K miles before it gives it up. Don't compression brake with the TC locked up and the overrun, 3 gear manual selected, and the small overrun clutches will be fine. You have to force the TC on manually to do this anyway. Your motor home with the exhaust brake may do this? Not much room to upgrade the overrun clutch.

No real need to get crazy with a 4L80E as the TC clutch is the only needed upgraded area.

Point of fact: locking the TCC early at 35 MPH would slip the factory TCC on a minor grade and the ECM would see the slip and unlock the converter to prevent burn up. The Yank Triple Disc I have now won't slip on the same grade with low speed lock up. Sinning a little by lugging the engine, yes.
 
I called Central Transmissions and they suggest the Road Ripper 3000 because of my GVW and horsepower.

Being a motorhome, he should already have the 4L85E in his. The only real difference between the 2 is the planetarys used inside.

I mailed a box priority mail with my OEM oil cooler lines to Leroy so he could make some new ones for me on 4/3.

It was supposed to be there on 4/6. It is not and now it's lost in transit and the USPS has launch an investigation as to where it is. That will take 3-5 days. Mean while we wait (some more).

And the transmission issue still hasn't been resolved. I want to return the new OEM transmission to peninsular and order the Road Ripper 3000. They are about the same price.
 
That sucks. Hope they find them. Dealing with USPS is terrible on the rare occasions that you need to.

It happens. Chances are that the package is sitting on a shelf. If the local USPS seemed helpful, give a call and ask if that person was able to find the last Post Office to handle it and whether they could positively affirm that it was sent to the next location; usually that is enough to get the package 'un-stuck'.

Well, Jody, sounds like it's time to make use of all this wait time and fire off a batch of some of your home brew. That pepper ale you made was mighty tasty, maybe you can knock out a batch of lemon shandy wheat for summer while waiting for this mess to get straightened out.
