6.5L TD Motorhome repair/repower

Yesterday, I received an email from my installer. They said that the engine and transmission have been put together, along with many other parts in preparation for possibly completing the project next week.

Here's a list of parts I had them install:

New P400
Remanufactured transmission
New turbo
New stainless headers
New IP
New injectors
New injector lines
Upgraded PCM
FTB
New alternator
New power steering pump
New starter
New shocks
New brakes
New hoses and belts
New water pump
New radiator
New AC condenser/engine oil cooler
Custom oil cooler lines
New transmission cooler
New U joints
New Differential grease
New tires

And, I sure I forgot to list something, although I think I have most of it covered.

I'll visit them Tuesday to get some photos.

When I get it home, I'll need to install my gauges and fabricate a special hitch to carry my electric scooter, besides towing my small car. Of course there are all the normal motorhome things that need to be gone through after a prolonged hibernation.

There are other things that will have to wait until later this summer.
 
Progress :)

Visited the shop today. Got a photo of the engine/transmission.

As I was there they were getting ready to lift the engine into the pit.

I'm thinking that by the end of the day, the engine will be in place. Then to hook up everything and fabricate a new 4in exhaust.

I always found it easier to put the turbo and manifolds on before install. But there may be clearance issues doing that on yours?
 
The engine is in. :)

They are now hooking up all the stuff. I reminded them to ensure the grounds are connected properly.

When they get the headers on, they'll mount the turbo to see if the floor will need to be trimmed for clearance, because of the rear mounted turbo vs side mount. (although Peninsular said it would fit fine) That's why my installer left the exhaust headers off while installing the engine. They removed them before taking the engine out too.

Another thing is that I'm glad I had the Moroso pan, because there were doubts that the frankenpan would have cleared the chassis.

Is that a CS144 alt?
I found out the hard way even 2wd trucks/burbs need a new oil pan, kind of sucks cause it drives the cost of the swap up even more.

Yes, that is the CS144. I thought it was supposed to be plug and play, but we needed to get a different plug end and splice it in.

The latest is that they found leaks in the AC pump/compressor. They also have the exhaust mocked up, so now they can reroute the wires and FFM that were displaced by the relocated turbo/exhaust.

Still looks like there is a lot to do yet, to me.
 
Are you running a turbo blanket and some header wrap to keep things cool?

Yes, I have the headers wrapped and I have a turbo blanket too. When they get the down pipe finished, I will wrap that also.

It looks like they had to trim some more of the floor to clear the 3 1/2in elbow coming out of the turbo.
 
Here's a pic of 3 upper intakes. Left to right are: standard, motorhome (Workhorse chassis) and the supplied (from Peninsular) rear mounted turbo upper intake. Note: there is no place to mount the IAT or booster pressure sensors on the Peninsular one. Looks like I need to do some fabrication.

You can tap the Peninsular's plate 1/8npt for a barbed fitting for the boost sensor and 3/8npt for the AIT sensor or
Tap the lower intake.

I guess the only issue with tapping the lower is possibly having to remove it to do the job but.

I'd offer up the tried and true spacer design I have but I'm not giving up mine...sorry, too selfish I guess.

What's the exhaust manifold look like for one of those motorhome turbo setups? I have a GM4 Turbo off one of those setups, curious what the manifold looked like. Upper intake is sure different.

The original manifold or the custom one?
 
It's alive and running. :happy::happy: Now they are checking for leaks and buttoning up things.

I have to go back over there later today to pick up the down pipe so I can wrap it and take it back in the morning.

I'm hoping to be able to pick it up by the end of the day tomorrow or Friday morning.
 
After you get the small things worked out, when are you going on the road/trip in it?
