6.5L TD Motorhome repair/repower

I was hoping to pick up the motorhome today and go on a test run of several hundred miles this week, but I received an email this morning saying that they need to keep it through Monday for a Tuesday delivery. They found that when the engine torques the exhaust rubs on the frame. I suppose they need to order a different part.

I would have just hit it with a big hammer a little.

I just got back from the shop. They were able to rework the exhaust so that it clears and were just ready for a test drive when they noticed that it wasn't charging. They were working frantically to figure it out, but the work day and week are coming to a close in 20 minutes, so I guess we'll have to wait until Monday to what's up.

Sounds like they are doing a good job working out the bugs. Thats a good thing. Everytime I pay for work like this, the shop cuts bait and steams away. I get stuck with the problems. All work, with few exceptions are done by me.

Got a call, they figured out the charging problem. It was the fact that the old alternator had 3 wires and the CS144 alternator had 4. So much for plug and play.

Anyhow, the 4th wire was not connected and that's the one that excites the alternator. We all know that we need an excited alternator. ;)

They said I could take it for the weekend, but I would have to sign off on it, as they hadn't road tested it themselves. I said No, I'll wait until they test it on Monday.

This is a very professional place, not your average backyard shop. This place works on and builds million dollar busses and motor coaches.

I have contributed my share of labor to this project though. Custom brackets, advice and such. All would cost them time and me money.

My post earlier was complementing the shop. They are hard to find, especially ones that allow input and allow the vehicle owner to throw in labor. When I was younger I had working relations with shops like that.

I'm complimenting them also. I just hope all ends well, with all the combined effort.

Oh, here's a tidbit I learned last week. During this project, I had the idea of adding a second block heater on the pass side, just in case. It seemed like the time to do it. But, when the starter bracket was bolted on, it made it impossible to attach the wire plug.

Now I have not looked at it yet, but I bet there may be a way to make a modification.

I put mine in the rear freeze plug hole

Well, I got it home yesterday afternoon. There's lots of cleaning to do after sitting for 2 years. Plus all the greasy finger prints. While they did put covers all around there are still some that got missed.

It runs nice and is conciderably quieter than with the old engine inside the cab.

After the new tires are mounted this morning, I'll get to mounting the gauges so I can tell what's going on.

I'm excited to take it for a cruise and put some miles on it.

Get Clorox wipes, they do wonders on grease (dino & food). They are now my go-to staple for cleaning grime of any kind.

I noticed that the P-400 with a good tune actually makes the motor noticably more quiet as well. Seems the sweet-spot for lowest noise (in the Burb anyway) is ~2100 RPM's.

I'm excited to take it for a cruise and put some miles on it.

Plan on frequent oil and filter changes. So far I have not gone past 3K miles as I get analysis at each change and the motor is still shedding lots-of-stuff (as expected). Will keep this up until the reports stop coming back in the higher 'Severity' range.

First thing I noticed about the P400 was how quiet it is also. I did'int know if it was the roller rockers making it quite. Now after several reports is seems as though for whatever reason they are quieter. More mass??
