6.5L TD Motorhome repair/repower

I went to see my engine today. I didn't get any pix yet because it was still wrapped up in shrink wrap. I did get a pretty good look at it though.

It looks nice, but I'm worried the turbo is in a place that may cause issues with the dog house cover. At the least, I'm going to have to build some sort of heat shield around it. It's mounted where the FFM normally sits. That means I'll have to relocate that somewhere that I can have access to it. Plus, I'll have to move the GP relay and the wire harness in the rear of the engine.

I was assuming that the rear mounted turbo would have been further back above the transmission, but I guess I was assuming wrong.

The transmission was sitting there too. It also was all wrapped up yet, but the inside of the wrap was all full of red trans fluid. There were no strapping bands to hold it to the pallet. The receiver told me that's the way it arrived. Our guess is that it got bounced around hard enough to break loose and rolled over and around in the back of the truck during shipment.

Now the question is: when will I see a replacement transmission?

For the turbo, can probably mitigate heat either by a blanket or sending out for ceramic coating; same for any of the other components.

For the tranny, my vote is to get plenty of pictures, avoid speculation of what happened, and reject the delivery rather than try to fix it locally.

The tranny issue is being handled by Peninsular and the shipper, so hurry up and wait.

I visited the shop doing my repower today to check on the engine and components. I got some pix you all might enjoy looking at. And we are finding missing and wrong parts with this engine besides the damaged transmission. Now to move ahead with these new issues.p400-1.jpg p400-2.jpg p400-3.jpg p400-4.jpg p400-5.jpg

The PS pump needs to be new! Reman, well, just pull one out of the junkyard as it will last longer...

Already factored in, along with the alternator, vac pump (decided to stick with stock vs fabricating an electric one in. I've only had 1 fail me since I've been driving 6.5s, 1994 and it didn't fail, was just making noise), all new hoses and anything else that can be easily replaced now as the engine is out.

Here's a picture of the damage to the transmission, that happened during shipping. I'm still waiting for news on what and when.broken.jpg

Is that strike 3? If so, it should be smooth sailing now... Nothing like having the camper all set to go in the middle of freaking January in Minnesota...

Here's the email I got today, after I sent one yesterday wondering why I haven't heard anything in the past 2 1/2 weeks.

The wheels grind slowly forward.

"As far as I know the transmission has been picked up and is on its way to us. We have also been in contact with the factory about it.
Thanks,
Mitch"

I have a question.

When it comes time to put this all together, I will need an IP drive gear. I could use the old one from the motorhome engine, but I'd rather have a new one.

Do I just order one from the GM stealer or is there another source? I'm assuming they are all the same for 98-99 "6.5" motors, whether it's a pick up or a workhorse chassis?

That turbo setup is pretty. Welding doesn't look like the greatest but that should spool/flow nicely.

Best thing about the Ford pump is, it shuts off automatically when it reach's around 15" of vacuum. They use it for the HVAC and 4x4 hubs.
