6.5L TD Motorhome repair/repower

My shop installed the engine shown into a bus similar to vehicle above, front opens up pretty well, pull and put power train as a unit, front supported by fork truck, trans by a 2500# capacity trans jack dolly, rolls right out. Went from NA to a turbo, exhaust replacement and relocation, some gauge upgrade, bit of puttering with the throttle linkage. It was about 50 hours two guys on it full time. Sounds like the shop doing the work is close on the bid.
 
60 hours seems about right, it adds up real quick. Also agreed on having all the parts there, nothing worse than starting a project without everything and you are stop and go, makes it very painful and also makes it more expensive hour wise.
 
Just got an email from Peninsular, they say the new transmission and water pump will ship tomorrow. They also said the injectors were installed in the engine, per their engine builder. Hmmm, I don't see any in the photos that I took posted.

Maybe they are those special invisible units, high output. :rolleyes: :p
 
They are the new yellow ones, you know the ones that don't need injector lines. They receive the fuel through osmosis.

Picking one of these up Monday. Supposed to have 90k miles since Jasper did their magic?? to it, was in a short bus. Maybe I can share the OPs pain in the future.
 
If its a Jasper rebuild I'd ask them if they turned the crank. Most high production shops just turn them all. On a 6.5 turning will take the heat treated surface off so don't tell them that then ask the question :)
 
IMO A Jasper rebuilt 6.X engine is scrap metal. Their rep is horrible on those engines.
 
X2, on Jasper. Been snakebit by them on on gassers. Would never consider them again, or having anything to do with a diesel, let alone an engine with inherant problems from the factory. Maybe I'm just unlucky.
 
Believe me, I know about Jasper's rep. Have a few years in reman machine shop, know what to look at, won't be asking much of any GM diesels I putter with, after the good mileage and smoking the Prius drivers. I'm dreaming of screwing a center turbo w/mechanical pump into my 84 Seville 5.7 diesel.
 
Rumor has it that AM General isn't too pleased with them either.

I imagine taking apart a new motor to change the compression and selling them as 'improvements' would have most engine manufactures a little peeved. I'v no issue with one wanting to run lower compression and its good that there's a place one can go to 'have it their way' to satisfy their particular application needs.

I do know through one distributor that GEP wasn't fully aware of what Peninsular was doing ("We don't make an 18:1 piston") and it makes me wonder about warranties. I can't imagine GEP honoring any component failure when it's been modified by another company... would Peninsular pick up that warranty for their low compression versions? Classic 'not our fault' finger pointing scenario included in the purchase it would seem.

3bals, I certainly hope you're able to get all this sorted out and that your
transparent injectors show up as well as your being able to get the larger issue of a running motor home worked out.

Realize that the Jasper commentary is a little OT, but seeing as it is there . . .

My local shop *loves* Jasper motors as when things happen during the warantee period, Jasper respects the shop's diagnosis and fixes / replaces with no-questions-asked. (Not asking for blow-back, just adding value to the topic.) What lead me away from Jasper was that they would not guarantee any specific block and the warantee was only 12 months / 12K. If any of my other motors explode, I will consider Jasper as none of those engines have block-specific issues like the Detroit 6.5.

Basically, it shifts the warantee to the reseller. And completely agree that it opens the finger-pointing-disclaimer if things happen when a downstream shop does labor on the motor.
 
That's why I originally had set it up to have Peninsular do the install. It was scheduled for July 7th, 2014. Now we are here.

I figure at this point I'm not going to have any warranty at all other than issues I might have with the install. Can you imagine an engine issue and I have to remove the engine, send it back then eventually re-install it?

All this is making me wonder if I did the right thing at all. At this point the only thing I have faith in is the component parts that I bought and the install people.
 
Doesn't the warranty start on the "install date" from the installer?
