"599" project

lol prolly not enough it sure would be tough to place a value on what you perform...

I'll be coming up to visit my brother in Hackensack Mn in the July. I run up 94 to the Clearwater exit where I jump over to 10 & head north from there. I would be honored to buy you a beer or pop...

Sidetracked and new[used] parts

I got slightly derailed when I put the rear driveshaft back on. Rear brakes were locked up. Backed the adjusters off and got the driveshaft on. I was curious how the rear brakes looked anyhow because there was no fluid in the rear section of the master cylinder. I took off the drums to find cracked brake shoes on the driver's side and gear oil on the passenger side. Drums were in good shape.
Luckily I had brake shoes for 1 wheel on the shelf that fit. They were for a 77GMC c3500. I bought new wheel cylinders and grease seals and cleaned the greasy shoes. Both of the old wheel cylinders were leaking. All back together. Just need to bleed and adjust.
I had ordered a K47 air cleaner on thursday from a junkyard in western wisconsin. $75 It arrived today:thumbsup: I knew about the missing latch. The latches from the flat panel air box are the same.
I also got the mounting bracket made and painted for the FSD and heat sink on the back of the front bumper.

Snag

Bled the rear brakes with the mighty vac tonight. All went good untill I stepped on the brake pedal and blew the steel line where the frame bends up to go over the axle.:mad2::mad2: Surprise, surprise. The good part is that I have the fuel tank empty:thumbsup: It will be getting new fuel lines along with a new brake line. Better now than a surprise on the road. Now to decide weather to take the box off now and finish painting the frame or just drop the tank.

This is the 3rd truck like this that the brake and fuel lines have rusted out in the same exact spot. The first one that did it I only replaced the brake line because the fuel wasn't leaking ,yet. Got to drop the tank twice, with 3/4 full of fuel:mad2::mad2:
This one couldn't have happened at a better place or time.I was going to wait to finish the frame when I get my hoist installed. I still might.I'm getting antsy to get it running.

My first post here. :smile5:

This looks great! Turning a rebuild into a art! Detail work everywhere. I was in fact having similar ideas in my head as far as painting goes. I'm currently getting ready to pull a 6.5NA from a van to put in a K10. I was thinking about painting the fuel system a different color from the engine just to help contrast. This pretty much confirms it.

I love the use of the Alpine Green! It was funny, I saw the first couple pictures then went to see if I can easily get it. Found the Dupli-Color paint, but couldn't find it sprayed. Then I read the second page...

Just wondering- I probably just missed it, :blush5: but do you happen to know the mileage on the transmission?

I believe the transmission is the original with 200,000 miles. I'm not 100% positive because the cooler lines had been cut and put back together with compression splice fittings. It hadn't had a snowplow on it either.

Hey bk: Did you tear down those 6.2 motors you bought and check the blocks yet? Thanks, Dave
Not yet. I'm up to 13:eek::eek: of them. I'm going to build a test stand to run them also.I have a gep optimiser:thumbsup: to put in my 95 HD ex-cab before that. Thanks to a hail storm yesterday, :eek:I have tons of body work to do on 3 trucks:sad:. The hail was tennis ball size:mad2::mad2:

Fuel tank off

Got back at the project for a while yesterday during the hail storm. Got the fuel tank off and got the rusted brake line off. There was 2 couplings in the brake line ,so I only needed to remove the center section. I had the fittings soaking in pb blaster for a day so they weren't too bad to get apart. The fuel lines were very hard to get apart at the lift pump and the splice in the return. I had to soak and heat the fittings several times using a electric heat gun and pb blaster.
Got the new brake line made up using some napa1/4" polymer coated steel line.
I'm going to use regular galvanized line for the fuel and tranny lines because the polymer coated line bigger than 1/4" seems to kink when bent using a tubing bender.
Lots of cleaning and painting to do again

nice thread bk95td. the pictures are great and they really show how detailed the build is.

you made me a fan of the alpine green too and I haven't even seen the color in person. lol.

it bring a smile to my face to see such a clean 6.5.

you have quite a nice collection of Detroit iron too bk!

subscribed and I will be stopping by here again.

I've been somewhat sidetracked with the hail damage to the buildings ,junking a old ride and my newest shop tool.
I did get the brake line fabbed and the tank cleaned, primed and undercoated.
I also got the frame cleaned, primed and painted where the fuel tank covers it.
The truck I finnally junked was a 81 k10 that had been retired 10 years ago:rolleyes5: because of rust. The frame broke when I moved it! I had over $4000 in the 400 ci small block, so the drive train was salvaged.
The new to me shop tool is a 5000lb cap. clark forklift. I e-mailed clark for info on it and they sent me way more than i asked for:thumbsup:. I now have a copy of the original delivery card from 1971! It has all the major component part numbers. They also sent the numbers for all the published factory manuals:thumbsup:. There is still a over 98% parts stock at the local dealer.
It should be a very useful tool for many years to come. I got it for $1500.It weighs 8900lbs!

The forklift is more for stacking engines and parts on pallet racking. It will also work for a floor jack since it will lift the front of a truck with the engine in it.
My ceiling in the finished part of the shop is 9'- 6". The new finished part will be 14'. The forklift lifts to over 12'.
