figure I would chime in.
the superiority of a 5 speed 2wd goes only so far! first time since I have owned this that it has gotten a workout in good warm weather (I say warm, as I am going across Wyoming and it is in the 80s.) and she got hot on me. It never went past 235 (the blank large tick mark on the guage between 210 and 260) but it got close.
It is completely understandable though, I haven't cleaned the radiator, the grille and bumper are messed up, and its missing the little part of the bumper scoop that goes by the lines, so possibly not sealing up good enough to direct max airflow through stack, plus I was bucking a headwind. I only pulled over once, but after that I just slowed down and ran 2800-3000 in third whenever it wanted to heat. any time it went over 210 I put it on full heat, defrost, and high on the fan (I know, if I had a full charge of freon, it might run the a/c system, furthering the thermal runaway, so its a good thing it leaks and the safety switches dont let the comp. engage.)
on the flat, she will happily runin 5th, but throw a hill in, and I run out of cooling before I run out of power.
and in case anyone is wondering, after the long hot leg (cheyenne to rawlins) I popped the oil fill cap and dipstick, no blowby, and no oil consumption. I credit the computer de-fueling, the oil cooled pistons, the late 99 cooling system, and the mobil delvac all from scoring number 8. It also sounds the same, so I am 99 percent sure I didnt screw anything up.
I am pulling a 26 foot deckover PJ trailer 14K gross, weighs about 4500 I believe, truck 8500, so 13K bare rig, estimated 500 lbs of JD sickle mower, and estimated 5K worth of 4800 CIH 24' cultivator, so I am at 18-19K estimated. I am going to look into how much they charge to weigh, and if its cheap, I will see for sure.
In conclusion, It seems to have handled the long duration run at above 210. I feel the key is to moderate the heat change. I never let it cool down too fast, which I feel is key to not crack anything. Time will tell to see if I messed it up, and if I did, a teds motor might be getting shipped out. But so far, so good, hopefully she wont die on my 21st birthday, and if she does, I am now able to go drink my sorrows away!
