Waste Motor Oil as fuel?

I read on a diy used motor oil recycling website a few years ago on how to filter and reuse your oil as a lubricant not a fuel. I've never tried it but basically here is how you do it. You take your dirty oil/container and put it on a shelf. Then take your clean empty clean container and put it on a lower shelf. Take a cotton rope (the bigger it is the faster the oil will move through it. Put one end in the dirty oil and the other end in the clean container. Use safety pins to suspend the rope so it doesn't touch anything but the safety pins. The oil will saturate the cotton rope and work its way up, around and down the rope into the clean container. All the crap stays in the dirty container since dirt is heavier than the oil. The website said to use this cleaned oil in your vehicle to mix 1/4 new oil to filtered oil to get the detergents back into the oil.

You can also use a centrifuge to clean it. They are expensive however.

a great idea that might work for a couple of gallons, but i got 500 gal to process.

I can just see your barn now. You'll have a 55 gal drum elevated w/ 10-20 ropes coming out of it into a lower drum. If you have the $$$ I would buy a centrifuge. A lot of greasers use them to clean their wvo. BTW I have tried the filter bags and they do work but the soot is still there. The oil is still black. All you are doing is removing the large metal pieces. I used a .5 micron bag.

If i had the $$$$$,i would.nt fart around with UMO. I try to save money, not spend it.A cetrifuge is a great idea but too pricy, and one has to heat the oil to be effective.
There is a filter system on the market to restore the used oil so one can reuse it.works for hydr ,ATO and motor oil,But 8 grand is a wee bit over my budget. works great for trucking and construction companies though.

So, how fast do these bags let the oil trough?

The bags work okay but depending on how dirty the oil is will determine how fast they filter and how long they last. I used them for wvo.

although the cotton rope method takes a while it will probably get the oil the cleanest.
I bet it does:smile5: Drrrriiiiip...............................................................................................................................................ddddrrrrrrriiiiiiip.............................................................................................................................dddrrrriiiiip.

1 gallon a month.

Here are some links I found. The first one is the one I was talking about. the 2nd one I just found. It says to filter the oil w/ a paint filter then mix an equal amount of diesel to the clean oil. The process goes on from their. I would make one change to the paint filter idea. It says after you mix the oil and diesel to put it in your tank. I thing the oil would still have a lot of soot in it. I would probably filter the oil 2 to 3 times then mix diesel then filter at least 1 more time to ensure it is a clear as possible.

One more thing.... On the various grease/wvo forums they say that synthetic will not burn. It just accumulates in you exhaust system even when mixed w/ WVO.
