Truck Makeover

Rolling highway, nothing steep. I would have driven the tractor home had there been hills, only 35 miles.

Last year I picked up an idler arm and the steering arm, neither were real bad but I wanted to keep everything tight. I had changed the idler but didn't do the steering arm, it looked like an ugly job, and it wasn't a necessity then.

Yesterday I changed it as there was some play. I built a puller to get the arm off without removing the gearbox, I just removed the 3 frame bolts to raise the box up. If the hyd. pump wasn't in the way and I had to do it again I would pull the gearbox right out of there, what a bear of a job.

Everything is nice and tight again. Funny how things can creep up on you and until it is renewed it isn't noticed.

My 93 sits on its overloads too. It has a 9ft bed with 4 tool boxes under it and huge rear bumper. I have a similar pic/load in my avatar.

The puller was quickly put together, it worked good. I wanted a 9/16 fine thread bolt in grade 8 but couldn't get one in town.

tanman, those tractors weigh out pretty good.

What's with the turkey-gobble bead on that puller, Leo? :D

j/k, pal...

Seriously, the old girl pulls pretty good with the ATT and big weight, doesn't she? You've done that a few times, managed to keep the EGTs down and still pull the hills. Not gonna do that with a GMx, without some auxilliary charge air cooling.

Granted, it's central Alberta, not the Coquihalla, but there's a lot of resistance in one of those loads, rigged up like you have it, and wind is about gearing and speed, just like hills are.

Jim, I can still do a farmers weld on occasion.;)

It pulls well but I would like to try some other tunes, the one I have isn't set up for towing.

Thanks for the puller pics Leo.. Way more compact than the store bought jobbys for sure.. Does the job!

You're welcome.

Unless the lines were removed and the pump was rotated a bigger puller wouldn't get in there, I could just get a wrench on the bolt as it was.

Truck is looking good Leo! Any plans to clean up the dirty rims? With the shiny new bed they stick out like a sore thumb...

These rims were off a donor truck, rubber is about 50% Michelins. They are pretty rusty.

I do plan on sand blasting the original rims and repaint someday.

I like the center console you made up for this. What would it take to convince you to make another?

Sent from a padded cell in the secure ward.....trying to avoid the shock therapy...

Just an update.

I haven't done anything to the truck other than damage, I was checking fence on some new to me rented land and bounced it off of a big, hidden rock. I dented the front cross member up, bounced to the back of the trans pan and bent the trans x-member up and back. the only damage to the trans was the 2-3 shift sol as far as I can tell. The lube line was pushed against the 2-3 sol. I was lucky,it could have been worse. I've been waiting for the sol. kit for the last 2 weeks so it has been parked.

Sorry to hear that Leo.
That is why i only use old clonkers on my place, that way it don't really matter if it get dented and scratched and leave some cosmetics behind here and there.
There ain't much wiring left underneath on my old 89,the other day a front brake hose snapped off on a root.I got only rear brakes left.
I try to avoid big rocks though,..so far ..so good.:hihi:

Simon, I hear you. I managed to stay away from rocks with my old bale truck.:rolleyes5: No wait, I did hit one right after I put a new muffler system on it:hihi:

This rock was in some tall grass, I was in a hurry and wanted to save some time, we all know how saving time works out.
