The Stealth BOMB'r is under the knife

Well, good thing I broke the trans down.

The clutch packs and band were SMOKED. I had 2 sets of steels and frictions that were welded together and the band was nicely burned.

Just in time, at least your fluid is still RED. Any way to stack up more frictions/steels? Do anybody offer a carbon band?

Today was "clean the trans and get it ready for assembly" day.

Started cleaning everything up and decided to repaint the case.

I think I found the perfect color and texture for it. Black and Hammered!

Is that your truck sitting back there? I think I saw a tear coming out of his eye...

Yeeeeeeah, that's the BOMB'r.

It wasn't a tear though, it's simply snearing at the transmission.....taunting it.....letting it know that it has evil intentions for it when it goes back in.....just reminding it that it's comfy little life getting massaged in the shop is going to come to an abrupt halt when my right foot unleashes the demons within.

Die Transmission! DIE!

:reddevil:

Okay, I'm kidding. Really, I am. Don't die, don't die.....good transmission.

:rof:

Only got a little work done today; had two other trucks to get done.

Installed the new 2.5 apply lever, the new 2nd servo servo and the OD piston. That's about all I got done.

Here's the 2.5 that Jeff gave me to go with the VB vs the 5.0 that was in there. The 5.0 would have put too much pressure on the case and likely broke it.

Slide1-142.jpg

Here's the new Super 2nd Servo. Much better sealing and higher pressure spring.

Here's the new accumulator. Teflon seals vs the steel rings on the one that was in there.

Slide5-59.jpg

Started putting in the OD piston. The transparency film is used to get the lip seals in without damaging them.

Okay, this SOB is as ready to go as I can get it until the new clutch disks get here on Monday.

Here's the sub-assemblies going together.....

Here is why I can't put it together. Look at the teeth on the clutch disks.....

SunCoast TC that was rebuilt at Garmon's.....

Here's the old stuff that came out.....

All set and ready to go back together on Monday.....

Looking pretty schnazzy. You're going to have to be more clear on what is wrong with the teeth on your clutch discs...there is at least one person avidly following this that has no idea what to look for. :skep: :D

Look at the inside of the two clutch discs.

The one on the left is one that came out. The teeth are a fine pattern to engage the sun gear on the intermediate shaft.

The one on the right, while it's the same overall diameter, uses a course pattern. These clutches are meant for the low / reverse drum (the ones that burned up).

It's like trying the thread a 3/8 - 16 bolt into a 3/8 - 24 hole. The size is correct, but thread pitch is wrong.

The package of clutch frictions that was in the rebuild had the correct NUMBER of clutches, but there were 4 extra frictions for the low / reverse drum and none for the rear drum.

Forgot to put these pics in yesterday.....had them on the laptop.

Here is the stock vs billet output shaft. Notice how much smaller the shoulder is and how much the diameter is reduced at the base of the splines on the stock piece.....

Here are the internals of the OD section during reassembly. You do need a press, or at least a bottle jack, to disassemble and reassemble this part, as the spring weight on this piece is a little over 800 lbs.

Slide3-111.jpg

Slide4-78.jpg

This is one of the other parts that causes problems and is usually what causes poor 3 - 4 shifts. This is the wave spring in the OD section. I picked it up to put it back in and it fell apart in my hand. This is usually the snap ring that you find pieces of in the pan.

Slide5-61.jpg

THAT woulda caused a mess.

Any way to bump up the line pressure this time around?

Already done.

Garmon set the VB up as a high pressure unit.

Instead of running at 95 psi, it's going to run at 195 psi.

That's one of the reasons I swapped the apply lever on the front band. It had a 5.0 lever and using it with the new VB would have broken the case. The apply lever in it now is a 2.5.

With the power the truck has, this setup should bark the tires in 4wd up through 3rd gear.

Okay, got some more work done on the trans today.

As soon as the clutches get here tomorrow, it'll be ready to go in.

So, some how overnight shipping turns into 4 days and I still don't have my clutches......there showing as getting delivered tomorrow.

Which, like when I had the motor out of the truck turns into time to do things that I otherwise wouldn't have.

Decided I was sick of looking at the rusty azz drive shafts.....

Slide2-146.jpg

Haha would that be Kentucky chrome on them shafts or a nice sharp looking silver? Will that spray on under coat stuff throw the shafts out of balance? I think they'd looke pretty nice painted like that(give it that rough look but be durable)....id like to do that on my truck next time i got the shaft out...
