The "restification" of a 98 6.5 TD...

After seeing the type of folding mount I have on the way in this youtube video:

I bought this folding mount to replace it:

This one shouldn't rattle like the first one. That rattling and clicking would drive me mad up there on the roof panel.

As a side bonus, I can tighten it down just enough to hold it upright but swing down if the antenna does happen to hit something. I used to do the same thing with motorcycle clipons, tight enough that you could lift the bike i you had too, but loose enough that they'd fold up if you got into a spill....

Cruising through your thread, I noticed you said your running a information center in your OH console. I was planning to pick one up for the 99, my question is, are you running the trip computer version from an S-10 or just the basic compass temp version!? If your running the trip computer style, is the MPG reading acurate!? I installed one in my friends 97 454 truck and it's WAY off.

The S-10 MPG one did not work with my 98.

The 6.5 has serial 2 data which is required for the trip meter, but when I hooked up an s-10 trip DIC to it, nothing worked.

Many things are missing due to the 6.5 architecture. IE: fuel level input, etc.

Probably has something to do with the 6.5 being a kind of "half step" (mechanical rotary pump with electronics bits on it) between the older mechanical diesels and the more modern "full on" electronic engine controls.

My current one is just temp and compass which works fine as a "stand alone".

Things might be a little different after and LB7 swap though.....

Thanks for the info BJ, that is what I was afraid of.

Looks like i'll be getting a compass temp unit like I put in the 88 then. I was hoping for mileage, darn.

Hey Dave, when you swapped radio controls into a couple trucks (think I read it on FSC), what year clocksprings work in the GMT400 steering column?

I gots an idea......;)

Hey, what's this all about?

Time for a little go with the air powered rotary rasp:

Ah, breathing much clearer now!

Left a little bit of the center "ring" to provide some extra rigidity for the center section. Also, you can't see it, but I eased over the sharp edge where the air enters the plenum.

It is an "F" intake, no EGR or EGR plumbing at all. The lower is wide open. Nothing but a slightly domed floor. The upper was replaced just before I bought it, so it must have gotten one of the uncommon "F" intakes with the webbing.

I've often wondered why the web was there. Thought of everything from a baffle to smooth intake pulses to directing the air more at the runners. I've seen pics of it both there and not there on factory applications.

Meh, dunno why it was there really.

Gone now.....

Still goin' strong! I have a Cobra 29 LTD NW. I love it! Im ready to get back to working on my truck. My new Jeep Wrangler has been my center of attention for the past few months.

I do like the CB project. I have no idea what i'm going to do when I go round to put a CB in the 99. Was thinking one of those all in 1 units.

Yeah, cobra xs75 or something like that.

I thought about it, and it seems a good compromise for a tight cabin.

However, it's all surface mount stuff and doesn't lend itself to "tweaking".

I went with a cobra 29 because I has been hacked ten different ways from sunday already. There's lots of options for it out there.

Plus, this one is also a hands free bluetooth set for my cell phone.

Well I really don't plan to modify it at all, just use it. I have a old as the hills realistic in my 88 now. Thought about upgrading but a friend of mine who's big into HAM and CB radios said he was amazed at how well it talks and how clear it was and advised me on never getting rid of it.

That's cool.

I needed something I could modify for a deadkey less than 2 watts.......;)

Read up on some of the reviews on that cobra 75. There's some not so nice reviews about failures out there...

I have mine mounted to two triangular brackets with my scanner mounted under it on the center hump of the truck. Looks good, but slides around a little due to the rubber mat floor... Would be very secure with carpet tho.

Well, ran the power wire for the interior accessories today. 4 gauge copper from he driver side battery to an 8 fused monstercable block.

I stick a constant duty 80amp relay in to kill the power with key off.

Pulled the interior out and punches a hole in the roof for the antenna.

Finished off with a bit of plastic work on the rear floor vent for some clearance for the coax.

Edit: damned iPhone auto correct! Changed all my words around...
