The optimiser I didn't know I had

Check the Precups with a magnet, stock is non magnetic, aftermarket chinese are.
I never seen a precup without index notch, even my chinese heads/cups has them

I was wrong,:nono:I mean misspoke.:rolleyes5: There is a indexing bump on the side of the precups. Not a precise slot or notch as I would have thought.I put a precision straight edge on the precups and they are close. Not perfect. A couple pics showing the bump and side by side comparisons of the different precups. The ones installed in the heads are diamond.
Old gaskets are cleaned off and all bolt holes chased. A wash and blow dry and they are ready to put on.

Heads on!

The heads went on today. I used a little different order this time. Since it is a problem getting the head gaskets on with all the ARP head studs inI only put 2 of them in and then put the gasket on,then set the head on the block. Then put the rest of the studs in. Worked great! There was some discussion about the studs leaking coolant so I teflon taped the threads and put permatex form-a-gasket1 on them also. The form-a-gasket is a hardening type sealer. I highly doubt these will ever leak. Neither of the other 2 engines that I put studs in leak with just the arp sealant. I lubed up the threads for the nuts with ARP lube and torqued to 110ftlbs.
Push rods and rocker arms went on next. Torqued the rocker arms to 35 ftlbs. A set of dummy valve covers went on for painting and my home made block-off plates for the intake and exhaust ports[no pics of them cause the batteries in the camera went dead]
2nd frost plug heater and some cleaning on the block and it will be ready to paint.

painting the block & heads

Got everything plugged up and taped up. A last wash with laquer thinner and it's paint time. 3 coats of high temp primer 1/2 hour apart. Then 3 coats of color 1/2 hr apart. Pics are after 1 coat of color.
The valve covers and oilpan are dummy covers. I painted the oil pan and valve covers seperate to get better quality.

Back to work on the optimiser after a week of resetting injectors.Got the timing cover and timing chain changed. Ip cleaned ,painted and mounted. Water pump and timing cover plate mounted. Alternater/ps/tensioner bracket mounted. A/C-Vac. pump brackets mounted. Dummy valve covers and oil pan swapped for original oil pan and valve covers. Many,Many bolts cleaned and painted. Injectors and injector lines cleaned and painted.
I used permatex "The Right Stuff" on the oil pan and valve covers. Worked great. I like it that you can tighten the bolts very soon after assembling. It took a whole can to do the oil pan and valve covers. Starting to shape up. Should be together by next weekend hopefully:thumbsup:

Maybe you should go into business....."Alpine Diesel"

That color is Alpine green....correct?
You are correct The color is alpine green/ detroit diesel green:thumbsup: Not shure about going into business building these.

you know you want to!!! heck id buy one from you. just cause iv tried to match you quality and it a crazy lot of work
Doing it for a living is a lot different than doing it for a hobby. Wayyyyy too many hours in one of these. Other things more profitable and less work. Parts maybe??

More progress

Getting some more done. Injectors ,return lines.high pressure lines, engine wiring harness and intake manifold.

I really enjoy seeing pictures of everyone who does this. However, everytime I see THESE shots, there is just a sharper level of detail and neatness than the rest. Well done.
