The Cowboy Cadillac Revival

Just read through your whole thread.

Maybe I missed it, but did you put together a block with a cracked main web?

It might be my gasser background showing, but a cracked main web in a block is a junked block.....I can't imagine that being different in a diesel.

You missed the part about the "full torque" inserts that can be used to fix cracks if they are in the right place:thumbsup: The machinist kinda forgot:rolleyes5: the first step before machining:confused::eek::mad2:,checking for cracks.

Ah, I see.

I'm not familiar with "full torque inserts", is it similar to a helicoil?

Guess I need to get Googling for some background.......):h

Missy Good wench is the member here with the most experence with them. Over $300 in special tooling is required for them. Missy has done several builds on this site using them. I believe the full name is "Full Torque Lock and Stitch. Other members are familar with them also.

well after a long 9 months the motor is finnaly almost done.:rolleyes5: i am waiting on the staniless threaded rod for the manifolds and it will be time to drop the motor in:smile5:. i still have a few things to buy and unfortunatly they arent cheap, i need a new radiator, since my almost brand new one fell over and got a hole in it:mad2:. an A/C condensor, and a clutch. still have to put the tranny back together as well.

if i succed in getting the motor in this weekend there is no reason why i cannot fire it up with out the tranny in is there? the only possible problem i can see is not being able to push the clutch in since the slave cylinder is out of the tranny and would blow out. but i can push the switch manually im hopeing?

Josh I wouldnt try that. There is nothing to hold the engine up, side to side etc without the trans in there.

well i got the motor in today still got some stuff to do to it but its back between the frame rails

Nice color choice.....no need for an engine compartment light! I liked the thermostat housing on backward too!

I don't even put the thermostat in untill the engine is full of coolant. The newer engines I fill through the thermostat opening. No chance for air locking when there's very little air in there to start out with.

Well after some mishaps i fired it up today. for any one reading this in another thread it explanes that i had to pull the motor back out due to a coolant leak between the head and block on the drivers side:mad2:, turned out to be a low spot in the head that was supposed to have been decked by the same machinest that didnt check the block for cracks. dont think i will go back to him.:nonod:

I droped the motor and tranny in last weekend as a single unit, kind of difficult but much easier than lifting the tranny up in there after.

Got it all hooked up and got the t case inplace over the past week. and then today got it fired up.

I cracked the 4 injector lines on the D side and cranked it over till i saw fuel closed them and got it to fire up. it ran but really rough looked over and saw fuel coming out of the front injector line on the Pass side, it was loose, turned out that when i was putting stuff back together i must have forgotten to tighten them up on that side.:mad2: had to pull the heat shield off and tighten them all up after that it fired up the idel smothed out and i got to hear the rattle of a 6.5 again for the first time in 11 months

i do have one problem i cant get the clutch to fully disingage, im going to do a search beacouse i remember a thread about some one elses struggle with this a while back. if i cant find it ill start a new thread

It's gotta feel good to hear it run after that long of a struggle.:thumbsup: Congrats. Hope it stays running and serves you well.:agreed:
Are you starting the crew cab project soon?:D

It was a big relef when it started up. the CC goes under the wrench next! Thats the hope any way. once i get this clutch problem worked out this truck will be going in for the new windows and then it will be drive able again.

i will post some but iv got to get the clutch working better so i can give it a good break in. iv heard that the first 10 min of engine life is the most important for seating the rings
