The Cowboy Cadillac Revival

here are before and after pics of the number one cyl after honing took most the rust out but there are some ruff spots so i think its going to have to get sent to the machinest. the darn hone broke on me and the parts store in town dosent have another one so i couldnt do any other cycl but i think they are all going to need to get cleaned up

will over sized rings be enough if i have to go .01 or will i have to get larger pistons??

You want the pistons on the loose side so they don't seize when you get them to hot, if you go oversize rings you better check end gap.

The pistons will expand with heat so much that they can seize in the bore, my 6.2 has a fairly loose stock bore, and had exhaust temps over 1600 degrees with no seizure or piston melting,some of the 6.5s have oil cooled pistons to deal with to much piston expansion.
 
If you over bore the cyl. over bore pistons should be used. Specs. call for a clearance of ..0037-.0047 on 1-6 and .0042-.0052 on 7&8.
 
.010 might be plenty with stock pistons, I use 20/50 oil. I don't have an specs on piston to wall clearance,but if you want to do it cheap just hone it, if its still pitted it will just take oil,it will still run fine. When I pull the heads I'll stick a feeler gauge between the piston and cyl wall,and see what I got. Don't know if I would bore a cracked block.
 
That's what my Haynes book calls for, it would be piston O.D. to cyl. I.D. You would use a micrometer on the pistons, the cyl. would be measured with a (the proper name escapes me) telescopic I.D. "T" tool which would be measured by a Micrometer.
 
We were thinking .010 overbore that would be.020 total, does your manual have a min and max standard bore size. Measuring the piston and bore is a good idea.
 
It doesn't give a difference to bore changes, just a spec for piston to bore, I assume it is the same for any bore size.
 
the only crack i have found in this block is the very small hairline crack in the #4 main web. i am looking into the FullTourqe inserts to fix this problem. i was looking over there web sit and they may even have a fix for my broken starter botl holes on the onther engine

6.2: 3.9789-3.9824 in. bore

6.5: 4.057-4.058 in. bore

taper: .0008 in.

out of round: .0008 in.
 
That block looks like it was used for a boat anchor!
